Men's Tennis Completes Perfect Valentine's Day Sweep

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team swept a Valentine's Day doubleheader, winning all 12 of its matches in the process. The Green and Gold opened with a 5-0 victory over Mid-American Conference foe Binghamton, who was coming off a narrow 4-3 loss at No. 59 VCU on Friday, before routing BIG EAST counterpart Villanova, 7-0, in the night cap. The Tribe bumped its season ledger to 8-5 with the victories.

Senior Will Juggins, junior Scott Huang and freshman Christian Cargill led the way for W&M going a perfect 2-0 in singles competition on the day. Both Juggins and Huang were also part of winning doubles teams in both matches.

Against Binghamton, W&M opened with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 pairs' positions to claim the initial point of the match. Huang and freshman Lars de Boer made quick work of the Bearcats' Thomas Caputo and Vihar Shah, 6-1, at No. 3 for their first win as a tandem. The Tribe's All-CAA duo from a season ago, Juggins and fellow senior Aaron Chaffee, clinched the point, breaking the BU team of Sid Hazarika and Ismael Dinia in the final game on the way to a 6-4 victory. By contrast, Binghamton used wins at No. 1 and No. 3 with the same teams to take the doubles point on Friday from VCU.

In singles, the Tribe claimed matches at the top two positions and the bottom two posts, while the middle two matches were abandoned. Cargill and Juggins picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Cargill bounced Harzarika, 6-1, 6-4, at the top spot. Harzarika was named the America East Player of the Year a season ago, before the Bearcats moved to the MAC this spring. Juggins recorded his 40th career singles win, downing Robin Lesage, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2.

de Boer and Huang made it a clean sweep for the Tribe with singles wins. At No. 5, de Boer downed Caputo, 6-4, 6-3, for his 13th win of the year, while improving to 8-3 in dual-match competition. Huang won by a matching score over Frenk Kote to push his record at No. 6 to 4-1.

In the nightcap against Villanova, the Green and Gold won the doubles point with convincing wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Addison Appleby and Cargill won their first dual-match as a pair and improved to 4-3 overall with a 6-1 win over Matt Phelps and William Elmore at the second doubles slot. Huang and de Boer made it two-for-two at No. 3 with a 6-2 win over Kelly Donaldson and Joseph Monaldo. Chaffee and Juggins rounded out the doubles victories with a 6-5 win over Tim Abbracciamento and Chris Seitz at the top spot.

Appleby and Huang both dropped just one game in winning at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions. Appleby bounced Michael Rosengren, 6-0, 6-1, for his 10th win of the year, while Huang improved to a perfect 2-0 at No. 4, winning his third straight match by the same score over Phelps. Huang upped his season ledger to 12-5, including a team-best 8-2 dual-match ledger.

Cargill and Juggins both won for the second time at the top two positions. Cargill ran his team-best win total to 14 with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Seitz. He is also 7-5 at the No. 1 post this season. Juggins won his ninth match overall and fourth at No. 2, defeating Abbracciamento, 6-4, 6-1.

Playing singles for the first time on the day, both freshman Alex Miller and Chaffee posted victories. Miller improved to 8-6 overall with his fifth dual-match win, knocking off Donaldson, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5. Chaffee remained a perfect 4-0 in singles competition this season, upending Elmore, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6.

The Tribe continues its homestand at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center with its second doubleheader in as many days on Sunday, Feb. 15. W&M hosts a pair of instate foes in Hampton and Longwood at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
