Scouting Howard
Since suffering close losses at UMass (85-79) and Rutgers (82-70) to open the season, Howard has won three straight, including a 73-54 win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday, and sit at 3-2 on the year. The other two Bison victories came against Medgar Evers, 106-64, and Texas Southern, 87-81. Last season, Howard finished the year at 16-16 under head coach Kevin Nickelberry.

Howard is averaging 83 points per game, while allowing 73.2. The Bison are shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and rank 23rd nationally in free throws made, connecting on nearly 21 per contest. Defensively, Howard limits foes to 39.7 percent shooting and forces opponents into 16.8 turnovers per contest. They rank 15th nationally with 10.2 steals per game.

James Daniel III is Howard's top player, leading the country in scoring at 27.6 points per game. He also ranks first nationally in free throws made, averaging nearly 10 makes per game and hitting 86 percent from the charity stripe. Daniels in fourth nationally at four steals per game and tops the Bison at 3.6 assists per contest. W&M and Howard will play for the sixth straight season on Saturday. The Tribe leads the all-time series at 4-1, including a 56-49 win in Williamsburg last season. W&M won the last meeting in Washington, D.C., 84-79, in 2013, thanks in large part to 24 points from Omar Prewitt. Howard's lone win in the series came in 2011 in Washington, D.C., 67-58.

Double-Double Combo
Senior Terry Tarpey and junior Omar Prewitt became the first pair of Tribe teammates since 2004 to record a double-double in the same game. Prewitt poured in 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the win over Hampton on Nov. 25, while Tarpey scored 13 points and tallied a career-high 17 rebounds. It was the first time two Tribe players recorded double-doubles in the same game since Adam Hess (23 pts., 10 rebs.) and Zeb Cope (11 pts., 11 rebs.) accomplished the feat in the CAA Tournament against Towson on March 5, 2004. The double-double was the 12th of Tarpey's career and the second for Prewitt.

Tarpey Dominating the Glass
Senior Terry Tarpey continued to show to mettle as one of the top rebounders in Tribe history. The 6-5 wing pulled down a career-best 17 rebounds in the win over Hampton on Nov. 25, marking the most caroms for a Tribe player in 20 years. It was the 18th-best single-game total in the country this season and the second most in the CAA, behind only Quincy Ford's 19 vs. Lipscomb on Nov. 21. Tarpey's 17 rebounds were the most for a Tribe player since David Culley's 26 against VMI on Jan. 17, 1996. In fact, Tarpey's total was the fourth-best single-game production for a W&M athlete since 1973. Tarpey currently ranks second in the CAA at 9.2 rebounds per game, including a league-best 7.6 per contest on the defensive end.

Dixon Heating Up
Over the last two games, junior guard Daniel Dixon has been on fire for the Green and Gold, producing back-to-back 20-plus point games and averaging 23 points per contest. He is shooting 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the floor and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from 3-point range in the last two contests. He scored a game-high 24 points, one off a career high, at Dayton, knocking down 6-of-10 from 3-point range, before topping the Tribe with 22 points on 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range in the win against Hampton. Dixon ranks eighth in the CAA at 16.2 points per game. According to the statistical website KenPom.com, he ranks 35th nationally in effective field goal percentage at 71.4 percent and 63rd in the country in true shooting percentage at 69.8 percent. Effective field goal percentage is the same as regular field goal percentage, except that made three-pointers are appropriately given 50 percent more credit. True shooting percentage is like effective field goal percentage, but includes trips to the line and converts it to a shooting percentage that approximates what 2-point percentage a player would need to have to score the points he produces on all of his shooting attempts.

Tribe Rejections
In the Tribe's win over Hampton, W&M blocked 13 shots, which marked the fourth-best single-game total in Tribe history. It was also the most for a Green and Gold team in 20 years. The last time a Tribe team recorded more blocked shots was on Feb. 26, 1996 when W&M had 17 vs. George Mason. Junior Daniel Dixon led the way with a career-high five blocked shots, while senior Terry Tarpey added three. Junior Omar Prewitt and senior Sean Sheldon added two rejections apiece against the Pirates. On the year, the Tribe ranks third in the CAA and 45th nationally at 5.6 blocked shots per game. Dixon is third in the CAA at 1.6 rejections per game followed by Tarpey in fourth at 1.4 per contest.

On the Defensive
A key to the Tribe's successful start to the 2015-16 season campaign has been its improved play on the defensive end. The Green and Gold has limited opponents to 64.6 points per game through the first five games along with shooting percentages of 38.8 from the field and 25.2 from 3-point range. According to the statistical website KenPom.com, the Tribe possesses a defensive efficiency rating of 100.7 and ranks No. 133 nationally in the category, as of Nov. 25. It is the Tribe's best efficiency rating since 2002 and its highest national ranking in the category. W&M leads the CAA in scoring defense, defensive 3-point percentage and field goal percentage defense. Nationally, the Green and Gold ranks 23rd in defensive 3-point percentage and 77th in scoring defense, as of Nov. 25.

Winning in November
The month of November has been a good one for Tribe basketball recently. Over the last two years, the Green and Gold has won nine of its 11 games in November. After a season-opening loss at Florida last season, W&M won five straight games to end the month in 2014. This season, the Tribe is off to a 4-1 start in November, including its season-opening win at N.C. State.

Prewitt Scoring
During each season of his career, junior Omar Prewitt has seen an increase in his scoring, and the early returns in 2015-16 are no different. After topping the 20-point mark twice in the last three games, the 6-7 wing is averaging 17.4 points per game, which ranks fifth in the CAA. Prewitt is W&M's active leader with 896 career points, which ranks 153rd nationally among active Division I players (as of Nov. 25) and eighth in the CAA. His career scoring average of 12.8 points per game is 55th among active Division I players. He is only 104 points away from becoming the 38th player in program annals with 1,000 career points and the 11th under head coach Tony Shaver, which is the most for a W&M head coach. Prewitt averaged 11.4 points per game as a freshman on the way to earning CAA Rookie of the Year honors, before tallying an average of 13.5 last season, which ranked fourth in the CAA among returning players this season. During the 2014-15 campaign, he twice scored 30 or more points, including a career-high 33 points in the Tribe's CAA semifinal win over Hofstra.
