Scouting DaytonDayton enters the contest with the Tribe off a pair of convincing victories over Southeast Missouri State, 84-53, and Alabama, 80-48. The Flyers, who were the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic 10, is receiving votes in both the
Associated Press Top 25 and the
USA Today Coaches Poll.

After only allowing opponents to score 60.8 points per game last season, Dayton has been even better defensively in 2015-16, limiting foes to just 50.5 points per game. The Flyers held Southeast Missouri State and Alabama to just 30.6 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from 3-point range in the opening two games. Offensively, Dayton is averaging 82 points per game, hitting 49.1 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from 3-point range.

Four players are averaging in double figures for the Flyers led by Charles Cooke, who spent the first two seasons of his career at JMU. Cooke, who tallied 21 points against Alabama, is averaging 14 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Darrell Davis is scoring 12.5 points per game followed by Ryan Mikesell at 12.0 and Scoochie Smith at 11.5. Mikesell is shooting 66.7 percent from 3-point range, hitting three treys per game, while Smith also averages four assists and four steals per game. Kendall Pollard leads Dayton at nine rebounds per game, while Steve McElvene, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds vs. Alabama, is nearly averaging a double-double at 9.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

3-0 StartWith its victory over Washington Adventist, the Tribe started the season 3-0 for the second time in the last four seasons. In the 111-year history of W&M basketball, it marks just the 24th time a Tribe team has started 3-0. A victory over Dayton would give the Green and Gold just its second 4-0 start in the last 50 years and only the 10th in school history. The only time W&M started a season 4-0 in last 50 years was in 1992-93.

Prewitt ScoringDuring each season of his career, junior
Omar Prewitt has seen an increase in his scoring, and the early returns in 2015-16 are no different. After leading the Tribe in scoring in each of the last two games at Liberty (16) and against Washington Adventist (22), the 6-7 wing is averaging 18.3 points per game, which ranks fifth in the CAA. Prewitt is W&M's active leader with 864 career points, which ranks 163rd nationally among active Division I players (as of Nov. 19). He is only 136 points away from becoming the 38th player in program annals with 1,000 career points and the 11th under head coach
Tony Shaver, which is the most for a W&M head coach. Prewitt averaged 11.4 points per game as a freshman on the way to earning CAA Rookie of the Year honors, before tallying an average of 13.5 last season, which ranked fourth in the CAA among returning players this season. During the 2014-15 campaign, he twice scored 30 or more points, including a career-high 33 points in the Tribe's CAA semifinal win over Hofstra.

Production in Reserve The bench has been a key the Tribe's 3-0 start, giving W&M valuable minutes and important production. The Green and Gold outscored each of its first three opponents off the bench and tallied more than 20 points from its reserves in each contest. The Tribe bench is averaging 22.7 points and 12 rebounds per game, while shooting 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field. Since 2013-14, the Tribe is 21-9 (.700) when scoring 20 or more points off the bench, and 11-2 (.846) over the last two season when outscoring its foes in bench points. Sophomore
Greg Malinowski leads the Tribe reserves in scoring at 6.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He just missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high eight rebounds at Liberty. Sophomore
Jack Whitman, who is averaging 6.3 points per game off the bench, scored a career-high nine points at Liberty, while fellow classmate
Connor Burchfield was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and led the Tribe bench with eight points at N.C. State.

Winning on the Road With its wins at N.C. State and Liberty, W&M notched back-to-back road wins to open a season for just the third time in school history and the first since the 1945-46 season. It also marks just the eighth time in program annals that the Green and Gold has won its first two road games of the season. Three of those occasions have come under head coach
Tony Shaver as the 2015-16 squad joins both the 2012-13 and 2005-06 teams with wins in their first two road games. Only once (1935-36) has W&M won its first three road games in a season. The Tribe also won its first two road games in 1940-41, 1945-46, 1948-49 and 1959-60 as well. During Shaver's tenure, W&M has enjoyed success on the road, including two of the top three road win totals in program history with 10 in 2009-10 and eight in 2013-14. The Tribe's 85-68 win at N.C. State marked the 10th time in school history that W&M won a road game to open the season and the first since 1992-93.

Shooting 50 PercentA forerunner for Tribe victory during head coach
Tony Shaver's tenure has been its ability to shoot 50 percent or better from the field. The Tribe has pulled the trick in the first two games of 2015-16, connecting on 51.7 percent (31-of-60) at N.C. State and 55.6 percent (25-of-45) at Liberty. Over the last three seasons, W&M has connected on 50 percent or better from the field 30 times, amassing a record of 27-3 (.900) in those contests. During Shaver's 13 seasons, the Green and Gold is 72-11 (.867) when shooting 50 percent or better. Last season, W&M ranked 14th nationally at 48.3 percent and upped that percentage to 50.4 in CAA play.

Scoring InsideKnown for its 3-point shooting, the Tribe offense showed an ability to score in the paint as well averaging 42.7 points per game in the first three contests of the year. The Green and Gold outscored the ACC foe N.C. State, 40-28, in paint, before topping Liberty, 42-30, and Washington Adventist, 46-34. Over the last two seasons, W&M is 6-0 when scoring 40 or more points in the paint. In fact, the Tribe was 14-1 in 2014-15 when scoring 30 or more points in the paint. Since 2013-14, W&M is 19-2 (.905) when it scores 34 or more points in the paint. Over the last three seasons, W&M is 28-2 (.933) when outscoring its opponents in the paint, including victories in each of list last 18 games when topping its foes in the paint.

On the BreakThe Tribe flashed its ability to get on the break in its victories at N.C. State and against Washington Adventist. W&M outscored the Wolfpack, 17-4, in fastbreak points, before topping WAU, 24-11, in transition. Since 2012-13, the Green and Gold is 21-5 (.808) when scoring 10 or more fastbreak points in a game. The Tribe is 26-10 (.722) when outscoring its opponents in fastbreak points over the last three seasons.
