News and Notes- W&M squares off with Liberty for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. The Tribe has won three straight in the series, including the last two in Lynchburg.

- The Green and Gold's win at N.C. State on Friday was its first to open a season on the road since 1992-93. The Tribe will attempt to win back-to-back road games to open a season for just the third time in school history and for the first time since 1945-46.

Scouting LibertyLiberty opened the 2015-16 campaign with a pair of non-Division I victories over the weekend on back-to-back days. After knocking off Covenant, 64-62, on Friday, the Flames followed it up with a dominating 90-52 win over Summit. Ritchie McKay, who enters the first season of his second stint with Liberty and third overall, leads the Flames, who finished 8-24 last season. He led LU to a 39-28 mark in 2007-08 and 2008-09, and returned this season after spending the last six seasons as the associate head coach at Virginia.

Sophomore Ryan Kemrite leads Liberty in scoring through two games with 17.5 points per game, including 8-of-13 from 3-point range. He scored 22 points on 6-of-7 from 3 vs. Summit. Sophomore Evan Maxwell is averaging nearly a double-double for the Flames at 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. Freshman Lovell Cabbil, who averages 12.5 points per game, had a pair of memorable performances in his first two collegiate games. He made the game-winning free throws with two seconds left against Covenant, before tallying 19 points on 5-of-7 from 3-point range vs. Summit. In the win over Summit, Liberty shot 58.9 (33-of-56) from the field, including an impressive 14-of-28 from 3-point range.

Tuesday's game will be the seventh meeting between the Virginia programs in the last eight seasons. The all-time series is tied at four apiece, but the Tribe has won each of the last three meetings, including an 84-72 triumph in Williamsburg in 2013.
Omar Prewitt tallied 18 points, six rebounds and four assists in that contest, while
Terry Tarpey added 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting and seven rebounds. In fact in two career games against Liberty, Tarpey is averaging 13.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, one blocked shot and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting 76.9 percent (10-of-13). The Tribe owns triumphs in the last two contests in Lycnburg, but the Flames lead the series at home at 3-2.

Winning the Opener on the Road The Tribe's 85-68 win at N.C. State marked the 10th time in school history that W&M won a road game to open the season. It was W&M's first season-opening win away from home since an 81-76 double OT victory at UNCG in 1992-93. The win at N.C. State was just the second road victory to open a season in the last 60 years for the Green and Gold. The Tribe's eight other road wins to open a year came in 1920-21, 1941-42, 1940-41, 1945-46, 1946-47, 1947-48, 1949-50 and 1953-54.

Tribe Wins Over the ACCThe Tribe's 85-68 triumph at N.C. State on Friday was the program's 16th against an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team since the league was established in 1953 and the seventh on the road. Three of those road ACC victories have come under the direction of head coach
Tony Shaver in the last six seasons. Along with the win at N.C. State, W&M posted victories over Wake Forest (78-68) and Maryland (83-77) during the 2009-10 season.

A win at Liberty would be….- the Tribe's fourth straight in the series with Liberty and its third straight in Lynchburg.

The Green and Gold also won two straight road games to start in 1940-41. The 2015-16 season is the 24th time W&M opened a season with two road contests.

Scoring InsideKnown for its 3-point shooting, the Tribe offense showed an ability to score in the paint as well in the win at N.C. State. The Green and Gold outscored the Wolfpack, 40-28, in paint. It marked the most points in the paint for a W&M team since it had 48 in a 100-79 win over Hofstra last season. Over the last two seasons, W&M is 4-0 when scoring 40 or more points in the paint. In fact, the Tribe was 14-1 in 2014-15 when scoring 30 or more points in the paint. Since 2013-14, W&M is 17-2 when it scores 34 or more points in the paint. Over the last three seasons, W&M is 26-2 when outscoring its opponents in the paint, including victories in each of list last 16 games when topping its foes in the paint.

On the BreakThe Tribe flashed its ability to get on the break in the season opening triumph at N.C. State. W&M outscored the Wolfpack, 17-4, in fastbreak points, marking the most fastbreak points for W&M since it had 22 at home against UNCW during the 2013-14 season. Since 2012-13, the Green and Gold is 20-5 (.800) when scoring 10 or more fastbreak points in a game. The Tribe is 25-10 (.714) when outscoring its opponents in fastbreak points over the last three seasons.

Off the Bench W&M received production up and down the lineup against the Wolfpack. Sophomores
Connor Burchfield (8) and
Greg Malinowski (6) led the Tribe bench in scoring as the Green and Gold outscored its ACC counterpart, 21-19, while shooting 69.2 (9-of-13) as a group. W&M was 8-2 last season when producing more bench points than its opponents. Since 2013-14, the Tribe is 19-9 (.679) when scoring 20 or more points off the bench.

Shooting 50 PercentA forerunner for Tribe victory during head coach
Tony Shaver's tenure has been its ability to shoot 50 percent or better from the field. In the season opener, the Tribe connected on 51.7 percent (31-of-60) in downing N.C. State. It marks the 29th time over the last three seasons that W&M connected on 50 percent or better from the field, amassing a record of 26-3 (.897) in those contests. During Shaver's 13 seasons, the Green and Gold is 71-11 (.866) when shooting 50 percent or better. Last season, W&M connected on a 50.7 percent clip in CAA play.
