Huge First-Half Run, Torrid Shooting Lead Men's Basketball Past JMU

Box Score
HARRISONBURG, Va. – A dominating first-half run and another scorching game from the floor propelled the William and Mary men's basketball team to an 84-65 victory at James Madison on Saturday afternoon. W&M used a 25-0 first-half run to take a commanding advantage and salted the contest away behind its second straight 60-percent shooting performance. The Tribe moved into sole possession of first place in the CAA standings at 8-2, improving to 14-7 overall, while the Dukes fell to 13-10 and 6-4 in league action.

Sophomore Daniel Dixon led four Tribe players in double figures with a career-high 25 points, while fellow classmate Omar Prewitt added 21 points, four assists and three steals. Dixon was 9-of-13 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while Prewitt was 9-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-2 from 3-point range. Senior guard Marcus Thornton added 17 points, hitting 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while junior Terry Tarpey turned in another double-double effort with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Making his second straight start in place of an injured Sean Sheldon, senior Tom Schalk had an impressive seven-point, five-rebound, five-assist start line in 25 minutes.

The Tribe broke the game open early with a 25-0 run over a nine and a half minute stretch to turn a four-point lead into a 29-point route. W&M started the game on fire, hitting 10 of its first 12 shots, and led for all but the initial 14 seconds when it was tied at zero.

While the Tribe offense was cooking in the early going, it was the Green and Gold's defense that highlighted the 25-0 spurt. During the near 10-minute stretch, W&M held JMU to 0-of-8 from the floor and forced the Dukes into eight turnovers. Prewitt and Thornton combined for 17 of the Tribe's 25 points during the spurt. At one point, Thornton canned three straight 3-pointers, and Schalk's free throw at the 6:56 mark extended the Green and Gold lead to 37-8.

JMU hit four of its final six shots of the first half and used a 12-2 run to whittle the Tribe advantage down to 19. Prewitt, through, scored on a driving lay-up, two of his 15 first-half points, with 38 seconds left to sent the Tribe to the locker room leading 43-22. W&M shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the opening half, including an impressive 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range, while holding the Dukes to 33.3 percent (7-of-21) in the opening 20 minutes.

The Tribe started the second half on a tear as well, hitting each of its first six shots from the floor in pushing the lead back to 29. Dixon scored seven points in the opening three and a half minutes, including a 3-pointer at the 16:47 mark to give W&M a 56-27 lead.

An 8-0 JMU run, highlighted by a pair of Jackson Kent 3-pointers, briefly pulled the home team to within 15, 62-47, with 11:54 to play, but W&M answered the bell with another decisive run to put the game out of reach. W&M scored nine straight points from four different players to extend its advantage to 78-52 with 6:51 remaining on a Dixon 3-pointer from the left wing.

W&M finished the contest shooting 60.4 percent (32-of-53) from the field, marking the second straight game in which the Green and Gold connected on 60 percent or better from the field. It was the Tribe's 12th game this season shooting better than 50 percent from the field and seven time in its 10 CAA games. W&M also connected on 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from 3-point range in the win. The Tribe outscored JMU, 36-14, in the paint and converted 19 Dukes turnovers into 23 points. W&M also outrebounded James Madison, 29-26.

JMU shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) for the game, including a remarkable 14-of-28 (50 percent) from 3-point range. The Dukes hit 11 of those 14 3-pointers in the second half. Kent topped JMU with a career-high 19 points, including a 6-of-9 effort from 3-point range, while Ron Curry added 16 points and six assists.
