The William and Mary men's swimming team turned in one of its strongest performances of the year on Saturday, downing Old Dominion 161-133 for its fifth straight road win. With the victory, the Tribe improved to 6-2 on the year, while the Monarchs fell to 4-5 overall.
Complete ResultsThe day for W&M included a pool record, two dual-meet records, and a total of six new entries on the all-time record books. Leading the way as he has all year long is junior
Jeremiah O'Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who broke his own dual-meet record in the 400m with a winning time of 4:02.40. He also swam the 100 breast in 56.56 seconds, improving to eighth in school history in the event.
The Tribe also took down a dual-meet record in the 400 free relay, thanks to the team of
Taegan Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.),
Will Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.),
Joe Eiden (White Plains, N.Y.), and
Billy Russell (Newport News, Va.). The squad touchd the wall in 3:03.91, the 13th-fastest time in school history. Manion and Russell also book-ended W&M's 200 medley relay that won in 1:32.13, joining with
Matt Goetz (Islip, N.Y.) and
Justin Barden (Gordonsville, Va.) to create the 12th-fastest race all-time at W&M.
Individually, Manion also won both of his events, including the 200 free where he swam 1:40.61, and his 1:49.08 in the 200 back that broke the Chandler Pool record. Manion's 200 free performance was a personal-best, and ranks him tied for 15th all-time at W&M. Eiden was another double-winner, in a rare brace of events. First, he out-sprinted the field in the 50 free to win in 21.17, and then he came back and swam 10 times as long to win the 500 free in 4:40.43.
Barden also picked up a win of his own, in the 100 back with a clock-stopping 50.49 seconds, and rounding out the notables was freshman
Tommy Kealy (Wilton, Conn.), who swam the 1000 free for the first time in college. He won in 9:42.39, instantly jumping up to 13th all-time among W&M athletes.
William and Mary closes out its dual-meet schedule next weekend, hosting East Carolina at 12 p.m. at the Rec Center. Before the meet, the Tribe will take a moment to recognize the four men who will competing at home for the last time, in Clarke, Goetz,
Chris Dong (Chapel Hill, N.C.), and
Carter Head (Lynchburg, Va.).
