The William and Mary field hockey team put up a strong fight Friday night against No. 19 Old Dominion, leading the match in shots on goal, but came up just shy in a 3-1 loss. The Tribe is now 1-6 on the year, while the Lady Monarchs improved to 3-4 overall.
Box ScoreAfter ODU scored early in the first half of a corner, the Tribe defense locked down and kept the margin at 1-0 through the intermission. Just a minute into the second half, W&M struck and tied the match at 1-1. Junior
Pippin Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) collected the rebound off a save in front of the goal and passed it to the near post and sophomore
Maria Pastor (Burke, Va.), who tipped it past the goalkeeper for the score. It was Pastor's first goal of the year, and the second assist for Saunders. In the 46th minute, ODU scored on another corner, and in the 47th, connected on a give-and-go pattern to peg the margin at 3-1. That would stand as the final score, despite another Tribe corner and a shot advantage of 8-6 in the second half.
William and Mary is back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting No. 3 Duke.
