John Banks Named W&M's First Men's Tennis Capital One Academic All-American

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - William and Mary men's tennis player John Banks was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Men's At-Large Academic All-America Second Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday. Banks became the first player in Tribe men's tennis program history to garnered the distinction from CoSIDA and the 58th W&M student-athlete to be named Academic All-American by the organization.

“This is the perfect way for John Banks to cap off his William and Mary career with the highest honor a student-athlete can obtain," head men's tennis coach Peter Daub said. "The standard he committed to and sacrificed for won the respect of his coaches and fellow teammates. It definitely set the tone for our program during his four years.”

Banks, who graduated from W&M in May with a near perfect grade point average in Economics, was the only student-athlete from the Colonial Athletic Association to earn All-America honors in the men's at-large division. He was also just one of four tennis players named to one of the three teams, and one of only two on the second team (the other two selections were honored as third-team members).

The at-large team for the Capital One Academic All-America® program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; and bowling, rowing and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have sophomore standing at their college, a GPA over 3.3 on a four-point scale, and be a starter or important reserve. The first-team selections from eight districts advanced to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees were selected.

Banks, who was Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team choice each of the last two years, led the Tribe in doubles victories with 24 and ranked second on the team with 20 singles triumphs as a senior. He topped the Green and Gold with 16 dual-match singles victories in 2013-14. Banks finished his W&M career with 60 singles wins and 70 doubles victories, which ranks 11th in W&M history.

Along with his exploits on the court, Banks was recognized for his accomplishment in the classroom as well. He was named to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa at W&M, while also receiving the Tribe's Robert Usry Award, given to the W&M varsity athlete with the highest GPA and 75 percent of his/her degree completed by the end of their junior year. Banks is a four-time W&M Provost Award winner and a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete choice. He was named to the inaugural CAA All-Academic Team for men's tennis.

In total, W&M leads all CAA teams in CoSIDA Academic All-America selections with 58. That number also ranks third among Division I programs in the state of Virginia trailing only UVA (73) and Virginia Tech (65).
