Shot Put
Once again the Tribe started the day off with a win in the throwing fields.  Sophomore Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the shot put with a put of 16.36m (53-8.25), qualifying for the IC4A Championships and marking the second year in a row that W&M has claimed the shot put.  Senior Matt Renn (Annandale, Va.) earned a fourth-place finish in his first collegiate shot put, heaving the stone 12.64m (41-5.75).

Discus
The duo of weight-men were back at it at the end of the day in the discus.  Frenia was once again champion, throwing 46.32m (152-0).  He is just the sixth man in CAA history to win both the shot put and discus in a single year, and first since 2011.  The only other Tribe athlete to accomplish the feat was Michael Howell '93 in 1992.  For the weekend, Frenia scored 28 of the 30 possible points in his three events (93%), adding a silver medal yesterday in the hammer to his two wins today and coming closer to the legendary treble than any man since Howell accomplished the feat in 1992.  Renn also added another point to his total, throwing a lifetime-best 39.58m (129-10) for sixth place.

3,000m Steeplechase
In the steeplechase, sophomore Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) claimed his first conference title with a time of 9:23.35.  Classmate Jacob Sears (Cary, N.C.) was just behind him in 9:23.86, a lifetime-best by more than 14 seconds, and freshman Cavender Salvadori (Wilmington, Del.) was fourth in 9:25.65, improving his best from earlier this year by more than 22 seconds.  Senior Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the scoring in 9:42.67, finishing sixth overall.

1,500m Run
Earlier in the day, redshirt-freshman David Barney (Lynchburg, Va.) ran a lifetime-best of 10 seconds to finish second in the 1,500m run, stopping the clock in 3:58.46.  Nathaniel Hermsmeier (Charlottesville, Va.) was fourth in 4:02.49, and David Gunnerson (Yorktown, Va.) and David Pennesi (Fredericksburg, Va.) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

Relays
The Tribe took third in both relays run on Saturday, the 4x100m to start the day and the 4x400m to finish it.  In the former, first-year men Alex Hedrick (Falls Church, Va.), Dominic Burkett (Chesapeake, Va.), Ryan Thomas (Fairfield, Conn.), and Matt Pittard (Lynchburg, Va.) combined to run 44.47.  Later, Jomar Aryee (Hillside, N.J.), Michael Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.), Thomas, and Pittard carried the baton four laps in 3:24.55.

800m Run
In the finals of the 800m, sophomore Ricky Cappetta (Stafford, Va.) ran 1:55.06 for fourth place, and Gunnerson finished sixth in 1:56.00.

100m Dash
In the 100m, Burkett scored his first CAA point with a sixth-place time of 11.09, his best of the season.  Burkett now ranks 15th all-time at W&M in the event.

High Jump
Burkett would also add another point later in the afternoon with another sixth-place showing, this time in the high jump.  He cleared the bar at a height of 1.85m (6-0.75), the second-best bar of the day, but was judged sixth on the basis of attempts.

Decathlon
Sixth place also went to freshman Sam Davey (East Greenwich, R.I.) in the decathlon, where he compiled a two-day total of 3,738 points.  His best finish was second in the pole vault, where cleared 3.80m (12-5.5).  Davey now ranks eighth in school history in the decathlon.

Triple Jump
Hedrick also earned a sixth-place showing, competing in the triple jump for the first time.  He recorded a best-distance of 12.54m (41-1.75).

400m Hurdles
Rounding out the notables was Aryee, who timed a lifetime-best 56.11 to take seventh in the 400m hurdles.  An improvement of 0.2 seconds over his previous best, the performance now ranks Aryee 13th all-time in school history.

William and Mary will be back in action next weekend, competing at the UVA Challenge on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10.
