Balouris Wins 3,000m on Final Day of ECAC Championships

The William and Mary women's track and field team finished competition at the ECAC Championships on Sunday with its second title of the weekend, improving to 12th overall in the final team standings.  The Tribe scored 25 points with just three athletes scoring, on two gold medals and a fourth-place finish.  Connecticut won the team title with 85 points, easily out-distancing the 55-team field, while Harvard was second at 46 points and Hampton third with 40.

In the 3,000m run, senior All-American Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.) won her first ECAC title with an impressive race of 9:10.41 all alone.  Balouris won by more than 20 seconds, and also broke the W&M outdoor record by nearly eight full seconds, beating the mark of 9:18.25 set in 1992 by Hall-of-Famer Janice Brown '93.  In the winter, Balouris also set the school indoor record at 9:23.03, making her the first woman since Brown to hold both the indoor and outdoor records at 3,000m at the same time.  Her performance Sunday is the third-fastest in the NCAA outdoors this year.  The win is also Balouris' fourth conference title, to go along with her two cross country crowns and the 2012 CAA 10,000m gold.

Also competing Sunday was junior Elizabeth Crafford (Darien, Conn.), who finished 10th in the pole vault at 3.67m (12-0.5).  That was the same height as sixth place, but she was moved down on the basis of number of attempts.

W&M now awaits word on possible NCAA Championship bids, which will be announced later this week.  Balouris and fellow All-American Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio) are qualified in both the 5,000m and the 10,000m, and sophomore Katie Johnston (Haddonfield, N.J.) is well-within the 48-athlete limit in the javelin.  Juniors Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Carolyn (Hennessey (Herndon, Va.) are within range of possible at-large selections in the 10,000m, as are Hennessey and sophomore Meghan McGovern (North Wales, Pa.) in the 5,000m.
