Men's Tennis Bounces Delaware on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team celebrated Senior Day with a 6-1 win over CAA foe Delaware on Saturday evening at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. After winning its 13th straight doubles point to start the match, the Green and Gold honored its three-member senior class of John Banks, Ben Guthrie and Ben Hoogland, before winning five of the six singles matches to ice the team victory. W&M won for the 11th time in its last 13 matches to push its season mark to 13-7, including a perfect 2-0 CAA mark.

For the 16th time in its 20 matches this season, the Tribe captured the doubles point with the seniors playing a huge roll. The senior duo of Banks and Hoogland won its eighth straight match, dropping just one game in an 8-1 triumph over Delaware's Alex Sweet and Zack Niklaus at No. 3. The Tribe pair improved to 18-12 on the year. The win marked the 69th career doubles victory for Banks, moving him just one win away from the Tribe's career top 12.

Guthrie put the finishing touches on the initial point of the match as he teamed with freshman Addison Appleby to pick up a win at the No. 2 position. The duo bounced Evan Andrews and Mike Furr, 8-4, for its sixth straight victory. Guthrie and Appleby improved to 8-6 overall, including a 7-2 ledger at No. 2.

Banks made quick work of Tim Puterio at the No. 6 singles position to extend the margin to 2-0. The Charlotte, N.C., native won the 60th collegiate singles match of his career in impressive fashion without dropping a game in a spotless 6-0, 6-0 triumph. Banks has won 11 of his last 12 matches to push his season record to 17-13, including a team-best 13-4 in dual-match play.

The Tribe's freshmen clinched the Senior Day victory with wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Appleby won his third straight, breezing past Evan Andrews, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 for his ninth victory of the season. Freshman Damon Niquet rolled to a 6-1, 6-1, triumph over Alex Sweet for his team-leading 18th singles win of the year. Niquet won his third straight and improved to an impressive 10-0 at No. 5.

Hoogland reached a milestone on Senior Day as well, picking up his 70th career singles win. The Tribe senior defeated two-time All-CAA singles player Troy Beneck, 6-4, 6-1, for this third straight win at No. 1. Hoogland pushed his season ledger at 15-14, including a 6-4 mark at No. 1.

Sophomore Scott Huang rounded out the Tribe win with victory at No. 4. He won his third straight match and ninth overall on the year, upending Mike Furr, 6-3, 6-3. Huang also improved to 6-4 in dual-match play, including a 5-2 leger at No. 4.

The Tribe returns to action on Sunday, March 30, when it travels to Charlottesville to take on defending national champion and No. 4-ranked Virginia. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center, but it could be moved indoors to the Boar's Head Sports Club due to weather.
