Men's Tennis Celebrates 'Tribe for Teddy,' Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - On a day in which the program celebrated 'Tribe for Teddy' Day, the William and Mary men's tennis team picked up a pair of convincing wins over in-state foes James Madison, 6-1, and Hampton, 7-0, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. During its match with the Dukes, the Tribe celebrated 'Tribe for Teddy' to show its support for former player Alex Fish, his family and infant son, Teddy, who was diagnosed with Menkes Disease, a disorder that affects the copper level in the body.

The McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center was a sea of green with patrons and players donning green 'Tribe for Teddy, Defeat Menkes' t-shirts. Menkes affects 1 in 100,000 newborns each year, and children with Menkes show symptoms during infancy and do not live pass an early age. For more information on Teddy and to help support the Teddy Fish Fund, visit the Teddy Fish Facebook page or the Teddy Fish Give Forward page.

In tennis action, senior Ben Hoogland, junior Will Juggins and sophomore Scott Huang led the way for W&M, posting perfect 2-0 singles marks. Juggins and junior Aaron Chaffee combined to post wins in both matches at the No. 1 doubles slot as the Tribe went a perfect 6-0 in pair's competition. Dating back to Feb. 2, the Green and Gold has dropped just one doubles match in dual competition, and overall, the Tribe has captured the doubles point in 15 of its 19 matches. W&M improved to 12-7 on the year, including its first CAA win in its first league match against JMU.

The Green and Gold swept the doubles against James Madison to claim the point for the 10th straight match. Senior Ben Guthrie and freshman Addison Appleby continued their dominance at No. 2 with an 8-4 win over Brett Moorhead and Alex Berdnikoff to stake W&M to the early lead. The Tribe duo improved to 7-6 on the season with its fifth straight triumph.

Senior John Banks and Hoogland clinched the point with their seventh straight win. The Green and Gold pair bounced Sebastien Salinas and Maxi Branth, 8-6, to improve to 17-12 on the year. At No. 1, Chaffee and Juggins rounded out the sweep with an 8-4 win over Robert Stirling and Miljan Ruzic.

Freshman Damon Niquet remained perfect at the No. 5 singles position (9-0) for W&M to push the lead over JMU to 2-0. The Green and Gold rookie blitzed fellow freshman Miljan Ruzic without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0, for his third straight win. He upped his team-leading singles record to 17-9 with 10 wins coming in dual-match play.

Banks and Juggins cement the Tribe victory dropping just one game apiece at the No. 6 and No. 3 posts, respectively. Banks rolled to his 10th win in the last 11 matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Niels Kathol. The Tribe senior improved to 16-13 overall and 12-4 in dual-match play with the victory. Juggins clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Brett Moorhead, his 10th dual-match win of the year.

Hoogland and Huang rounded out the 6-1 win over JMU. Playing the top spot, Hoogland picked up a 7-6, 6-4 win over Sebastian Salinas, while Huang upended Maxi Branth in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 4.

In the nightcap against Hampton, the Tribe again swept doubles to take the initial point of the match. The Green and Gold used a pair of new tandems and one reliable combination to take the point. The freshman duo of Appleby and Niquet did not drop a game in pairing together for the first time to rout Aleksandre Davlianidze and Lak Satchithananthan, 8-0, at the No. 2 post. Banks and junior Zach Braig teamed for the first time at No. 3 and clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Joshua McQueen and Henry Drakeford. Chaffee and Juggins rolled at No. 1, winning for the fourth straight time. The pair improved to 11-3 at the top spot in downing Miguel Suarez and Advait Kirtane, 8-3.

Redshirt freshman Austin Davidow quickly extended the margin over the Pirates to 2-0 with a convincing win at No. 6. He did not drop a game in bouncing Henry Drakeford, 6-0, 6-0, for his second dual-match win of the year.

Juggins continued his winning ways this time with a victory at the No. 2 post to push his season ledger to 15-14. The Tribe junior dominated Aleksandre Davlianidze, 6-1, 6-0, for his sixth straight win.

Appleby clinched the Tribe's second win of the day with a win at No. 3. The La Jolla, Calif., native upended Miguel Suarez, 6-1, 6-4, for his second straight victory and eighth overall on the campaign.

Huang, Hoogland and Braig rounded the Tribe sweep with singles victories. Huang won his second match of the day at No. 4, downing Hampton's Joshua McQueen, 6-2, 6-0. It marked his fourth win of the last five matches as he improved to 5-4 in dual-match play with his eighth overall win.

Hoogland evened his season ledger at 14-14 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Advait Kirtane at the top singles post. He won his fifth tilt at the No. 1 position and claimed his fifth victory in the last six matches, while improving to 10-6 in dual-match competition. Braig picked up his second dual-match win of the season, downing Lak Satchithananthan, 7-6, 6-4, at the No. 5 post.

The Tribe returns to action when it hosts CAA foe Delaware on Saturday, March 29, for Senior Day. The Green and Gold will honor its three-member senior class of John Banks, Ben Guthrie and Ben Hoogland during its home tilt with the Blue Hens. The match carries a 4 p.m. start time at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
