WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team won the doubles point, but suffered a 4-1 setback to No. 34-ranked Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. The Green and Gold took the opening point of the match thanks to wins from juniors
Aaron Chaffee and
Will Juggins at No. 1 as well as the No. 2 duo of senior
Ben Guthrie and freshman
Addison Appleby. The Big Green answered with singles wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6, before clinching the match with a three-set triumph at No. 1. The loss snapped W&M's four-match win streak as it fell to 10-7 on the year, while Dartmouth improved to 13-4.
For the ninth straight match, the Tribe opened by taking the doubles point, but this time against a Big Green team that controlled pair's competition throughout the season. Dartmouth entered the match with W&M at 32-12 in dual-match doubles play and had captured the doubles point in 13 of its 16 matches on the season. The Green and Gold turned the tables as Guthrie and Appleby quickly gave W&M the early lead with a win at No. 2. The duo rolled to its fourth straight victory, downing Chris Kipouras and Diego Pedraza, 8-2, to improve to 5-2 in dual-match competition at the second spot.
The initial point of the match came down to a pair of tight affairs at No. 1 and No. 3. The junior duo of Chaffee and Juggins ripped off the final three games at the top slot, including a break in the 12th game, to pick up an 8-5 win over Brandon DeBot and Brendan Tannenbaum and clinch the doubles point. The Tribe twosome improved to 9-3 at the No. 1 post. At No. 3, seniors
Ben Hoogland and
John Banks led 2-1 in a tiebreaker against George Wall and Erik Nordahl, but the match was abandoned with the doubles point already decided.
Dartmouth countered with three straight-set singles wins at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 positions to take a 3-1 lead. The balance of the match came down to a trio of nailbiters at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5. After Guthrie won the opening set, 6-4, at the top spot, the Big Green's Dovydas Sakinis rallied for force a decisive third with a 6-2 win in the second. Sakinis outlasted Guthrie in the third, 6-4, to clinch the Dartmouth victory.
At the No. 3 post, Juggins dropped a close first set, 7-5, to Brandon DeBot, but was up a break and serving 4-3 in the second when his match was abandoned with the team result decided. Freshman
Damon Niquet was in control at No. 5 when his match was abandoned. The Green and Gold rookie won the opening set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), and led in the second set, 4-1, when it was called.
The Tribe returns to action on Sunday, March 23, with a doubleheader that will include the 'Tribe for Teddy' event at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Green and Gold faces CAA foe James Madison at 10 a.m., before squaring off with in-state foe Hampton at 5 p.m.
As part of the morning match against James Madison, the men's tennis program will host
Tribe for Teddy Day. The event is to show support for former Tribe tennis player Alex Fish and his family. Teddy Fish, the infant son of Alex, a 2005 graduate of W&M, was diagnosed with Menkes Disease, a disorder that affects the copper level in the body. The disease affects 1 in 100,000 newborns each year, and children with Menkes show symptoms during infancy and do not live pass an early age. Coffee and Danish will be provided at 10 a.m., and the first 100 people receive a Tribe for Teddy t-shirt. For more information on Teddy and to help support the Teddy Fish Fund, visit the
Teddy Fish Facebook page or the
