Tribe Lacrosse Falls at Richmond, 13-7

RICHMOND, Va. (March 21, 2014)—Playing for the third time in seven days, the William and Mary lacrosse team fell at in-state rival Richmond, 13-7, on Friday evening.

The Tribe (1-7) owned a 4-3 lead midway through the first half, but UR (4-3) outscored W&M, 10-3, the rest of the way en route to earning the victory.

Senior Taelor Salmon led the College with three points (2g, 1a), while junior Alexi Farmakis provided a goal and an assist. Junior Ellen Shaffrey also posted an impressive performance and totaled a game-high six draw controls, two caused turnovers and a goal.

The matchup was closely contested early, as the teams were tied on four occasions during the opening 11:02. W&M got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Salmon less than two minutes into play. After a pair of scores by UR, the College responded with back-to-back goals by freshman MC Curran and senior Hannah Clarke that were separated by just 28 seconds to lead, 3-2, with 21:31 showing. However, after reclaiming a one-goal advantage, 4-3, following a score by Farmakis off an assist from senior Jenna Dougherty at 18:58, the Spiders closed the half with six unanswered goals.

W&M narrowed the margin early in the second half, as it utilized a 3-1 run to pull within 10-7 following a goal by junior Kaleigh Noon off and assist from freshman Mary Flick with 16:30 remaining. However, UR held the Tribe scoreless during the remainder of the contest.

Although the draw controls were even at 11-11 and W&M committed just two more turnovers than UR (16-14), the Spiders outshot the College, 25-17, and owned a 19-14 advantage in ground balls.

Emily Doyle led Richmond with six points (4g, 2a), while Charlett Stevenson added four goals.

The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Longwood on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
