WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Opening a stretch of four matches in four days, the William and Mary men's tennis team won its fourth straight, rolling to a 6-1 win over NJIT on Thursday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. The Green and Gold won the doubles point to open the match, before claiming five of six singles spots in straight sets. W&M won for the eighth time in its last nine matches to improve to 10-6 on the year, while the Highlanders dropped to 8-5.
The Tribe took the opening point of the match with doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The senior duo of
John Banks and
Ben Hoogland won for the sixth straight time, downing Markus Schultz and Holger Norregaard, 8-4, at the No. 2 post. They improved to a team-best 16-12 overall and 9-4 in dual-match play. Pairing together for the first time, freshman
Addison Appleby and sophomore
Scott Huang upended Arnaud Holl and Carl Jedlinski, 8-4, at the No. 3 post to give the Green and Gold the doubles point.
The Tribe won five of six singles matches in straight sets to take the match. Hoogland picked up his third win at the No. 1 singles position, rolling to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Markus Schultz, who entered the tilt 11-1 at the top spot this season. The Tribe senior improved to 8-5 in dual-match play with his 12th win on the season.
Junior
Will Juggins won his fourth straight and for the eighth time in his last nine matches at No. 2. He bounced Holger Norregaard in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to 9-5 in dual-match play with his 13th victory overall.
Huang won for the third time in his last four matches at the No. 4 position. The Burke, Va., native dropped just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Erik Artursson. Huang won his sixth match of the year, while evening his dual-match ledger at 3-3.
Freshman
Damon Niquet and Banks rounded out the Tribe victory with wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots by matching 6-0, 6-2 scores. Niquet won his team-leading 16th singles match, downing Arnaud Holl to improve to a perfect 8-0 at the No. 5 position. Banks rolled past Carl Jedlinski for his ninth straight victory. The Tribe senior improved to 15-12 overall, including an 8-3 mark at the No. 6 post.
The Tribe returns to action when it hosts No. 34-ranked Dartmouth on Saturday morning at the Millie West Tennis Facility. The match carries a 10 a.m. start time.
W&M will host a Sunday doubleheader at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, including Tribe for Teddy Day. The Green and Gold faces CAA foe James Madison at 10 a.m., before squaring off with in-state foe Hampton. As part of the morning match against James Madison, the men's tennis program will host
Tribe for Teddy Day. The event is to show support for former Tribe tennis player Alex Fish and his family. Teddy Fish, the infant son of Alex, a 2005 graduate of W&M, was diagnosed with Menkes Disease, a disorder that affects the copper level in the body. The disease affects 1 in 100,000 newborns each year, and children with Menkes show symptoms during infancy and do not live pass an early age.
