WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 2, 2014)—The No. 13 William and Mary men's gymnastics team posted the top score in school history with a 425.4 - 413.65 victory against No. 14 Navy at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
En route to posting the impressive team total, W&M also set school records on rings (73.4) and high bar (71.4) and registered a season high on pommel horse (70.7). Additionally, senior standout Landon Funiciello, a two-time NCAA All-American, shattered his own school record on rings (16.4), while classmate Daniel Potemski tied the school record in all-around (85.85). Funiciello's impressive performance ranks second in the NCAA record books and is just shy of the standard (16.45) set by C.J. Maestas of Illinois.
In addition to the record-setting performances, four Tribe gymnasts combined to win five of the six individual event titles.
The College opened the dual meet on rings and registered a 70.35, as sophomore Neal Courter (14.9) and Funiciello (14.65) placed first and second, respectively.
W&M also claimed the top two spots on pommel horse, as junior Jason Wang won the event title with a 14.55 while Potemski placed second with a season-high 14.45. The Tribe's team score of 70.7 represented a season best in the event.
Funiciello's winning score on rings (16.4) shattered the previous school standard of 15.95 that he established earlier this season and helped the squad post a team-record mark of 73.4. Potemski also came up big in the event with a season-high 14.7 to place third.
Courter won the vault title (14.7) and junior Michael Deitz finished third with a career-best 14.5 as W&M tallied a team total of 70.35 in the event.
In the fourth rotation of the afternoon, the College registered a 69.2 on parallel bars. Funiciello (14.35) and Potemksi (14.25) led the way by placing second and third, respectively. Potemski's score represented a season high in the event.
Courter claimed his second title of the afternoon on high bar with a career-high 14.7 and helped W&M post the team's best-ever score in the event (71.4). Deitz also contributed to the record-breaking performance by placing third with a 14.4).
In addition to Potemski, Jindra (81.35) and sophomore Keaton Ackerman (79.75) also competed as all-arounders and placed third and fourth, respectively.
The Tribe will close out its regular season at home next weekend when it hosts Temple and Army for Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m.
