Tribe Lax Utilizes Big Run to Defeat Coastal Carolina, 12-8

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 1, 2014)—The William and Mary lacrosse team held Coastal Carolina scoreless for a span of more than 30 minutes and rattled off 10 unanswered goals en route to earning a 12-8 victory at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.

Seven different players combined for W&M's 12 goals, as senior Jenna Dougherty recorded a hat trick while senior Bridget Brown, junior Alexi Farmakis and sophomore Zoe Boger all tallied two goals apiece. Dougherty's stat line also included a team-high four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Boger added a team-best five draw controls.

Defensively, junior Maggie Bermingham and freshman Abby Junior registered three caused turnovers apiece.

Although Coastal Carolina (1-2) owned a 2-1 lead midway through the first half, the Tribe (1-2) closed the opening stanza with a 6-0 run in the final 15:27. Dougherty scored twice during the pivotal stretch, while Brown, Farmakis, Boger and freshman Lindsey Jenks also found the back of the cage.

In addition to limiting the Chanticleers to just two goals in the opening 30 minutes, W&M also dominated the draws and owned an 8-2 advantage.

The College opened the second half much like it closed the opening frame and rattled off four unanswered scores to build a comfortable 11-2 lead following a free position goal by junior Amanda Johnson with 19:40 remaining. Boger, Dougherty and junior Ellen Shaffrey also provided goals during the run.

While Coastal Carolina closed the contest by scoring six of the final seven goals, W&M maintained a comfortable lead during the remainder of the game and never led by less than the final margin.

W&M finished the contest with a 12-9 advantage in draw controls, while the Chanticleers held a narrow edge in ground balls, 22-21.

Keri While led Coastal Carolina with three goals, while Alicia Geiter and Sara Nolan tallied two scores apiece.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays its first road game of the season at No. 3 Maryland on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
