Men's Tennis Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team notched a pair of convincing victories in a Sunday doubleheader, upending Conference USA foe UTSA and in-state counterpart Longwood by identical 6-1 scores at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe has won seven of its last eight matches and sits at 9-6 on the year. Senior John Banks and junior Will Juggins highlighted the Green and Gold effort, winning a pair of singles matches in the doubleheader sweep.

In the opener against UTSA, the Tribe avenged a 4-3 loss to the Road Runners from last season. W&M took the doubles points with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 posts. Freshman Addison Appleby and senior Ben Guthrie downed Yannick Junger and Boburjon Kamiljanov at No. 2, while the Tribe duo of Banks and senior Ben Hoogland upended Diogo Casa and Fabian Brand at No. 3. Banks and Hoogland won their fifth straight match in improving to 15-12 on the season.

“Texas-San Antonio is a good team, and I thought we played out best match of the season: physically, mentally and emotionally,” head coach Peter Daub said. “Hopefully, its a standard we can keep as we go through and compete in each match with confidence, belief and a passion to play to our fullest.”

Juggins and Hoogland quickly pushed the Tribe lead over UTSA to 3-0 win straight-sets singles wins. At No. 3, Juggins tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win over Diogo Casa, who had spent the majority of the year at No. 1 for the Road Runners. Hoogland won for the fifth time in his last six matches at the No. 2 spot, upending Joel Rubio, 6-3, 6-2. The victories were the 11th of the season for both Juggins and Hoogland.

Freshman Damon Niquet clinched the team victory with a win at No. 5 over Kolby Kilgo, 6-2, 6-1. He improved to a perfect 7-0 at the position with his team-leading 15th singles triumph.
 
After a UTSA win at No. 4, the Tribe won the final two matches at No. 1 and No. 6 to round things out. Banks improved to 9-3 in dual-match competition with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Boburjon Kamiljanov at No. 6, before Guthrie won his third straight, 6-2, 7-6 (3), over Yannick Junger at the top post. Guthrie won for the eighth time in his last nine matches, improving to 13-5 on the season.
 
In the nightcap against Longwood, W&M won the doubles point of the seventh straight match and swept pairs competition for the third time in the last four contests. Junior Aaron Chaffee and Juggins wasted little time giving W&M the advantage with an unblemished 8-0 win over Edward Becker and Steed Johnson at the top post. The Tribe pair improved to 8-3 in duals at the No. 1 post.
 
The Green and Gold pair of sophomore Scott Huang and Niquet clinched the doubles point whit an 8-1 win over James Fudge and Justin Higgs at No. 3. It marked the first time the pair competed in dual-match play this season. Appleby and Guthrie rounded out the doubles sweep with a convincing 8-2 win at the No. 2 slot against Warren Bryan and Bharani Sankar. The Tribe tandem won its third straight to improve to 4-2 in dual-match play.
 
Banks upped the advantage to 2-0 with his seventh straight singles victory at the No. 5 spot. The Tribe senior made quick work of Sankar, 6-0, 6-2, to improve to 14-12 on the season.
 
Juggins moved up to the No. 1 spot and won for the second time in as many tries on the day.  He defeated Edward Becker, 6-0, 6-3, to extend the W&M lead to 3-0. The Tribe junior won for the seventh time in his last eight matches and recorded his 12th overall win.
 
Appleby clinched the Tribe win over Longwood with a victory at No. 4. The Green and Gold rookie bounced Justin Higgs, 6-3, 6-2, for his seventh win of the year.
 
Chaffee and Huang rounded out the Tribe win over the Lancers with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Chaffee won his seventh singles match of the season, downing Steed Johnson, 6-4, 6-2, at the second spot. Huang tallied his fifth win of the campaign, 6-1, 6-4, over Warren Bryan at No. 3.
 
The Tribe returns to action when it travels to the West Coast to take part in the 124th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, Feb. 28 through March 2. The event will be held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif. While in California, the Tribe will also face No. 19 Pepperdine on March 1.
