Women's Tennis Drops Close 4-3 Decision to College of Charleston

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The No. 55-ranked William and Mary women's tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 setback to new Colonial Athletic Association member College of Charleston at the Carolina Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Julia Casselbury and freshmen Nabila Farah and Mélanie Roy picked up singles victories for the Green and Gold, but CofC took the doubles point and won at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles positions to pull out the victory. The Tribe fell to 3-8 on the year, while the Cougars evened their ledger at 3-3.

Senior Maria Belaya and sophomore Leeza Nemchinov won at the No. 1 doubles position, but Charleston answered with victories at the second and third spots to claim the opening point of the match. Belaya and Nemchinov downed Katherine Schofield and Jenny Falcone, 8-3, to improve to 4-3 on the season.

At the No. 3 singles position, Farah turned in a strong effort, rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mara Argyriou. The Tribe rookie upped her season win total to 11 with her fifth dual-match victory. Charleston answered with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 5 before the match came down to a trio of three-set affairs.

Both Roy and Casselbury picked up come-from-behind three-set wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 posts. After dropping the first set to Grace Baker, 6-2, Casselbury rallied to win the second, 6-2, and force a decisive third. The Tribe sophomore carried over the momentum on the way to a 6-2 win in the third. It marked Casselbury's 11th win of the season and fifth in dual-match competition.

Roy rallied for a three-set victory over Samantha Maddox at the No. 4 position. Maddox took the opening set, 6-4, before the Tribe freshman pulled out a 7-5 triumph in the second. With the team results already decided, the counterparts played a super tiebreaker and Roy outlasted Maddox, 10-5, for her 10th singles win of the year.

Charleston claimed the team triumph with a three-set win at the top position. The Cougars' Kelly Kambourelis upset Tribe senior and No. 78-ranked Maria Belaya in three sets to give CofC the win.

The Tribe continues its road swing in South Carolina when it faces the host and No. 33-ranked Gamecocks on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. Live stats and live video will be available for the match at GamecocksOnline.com.
