RADFORD, Va. ? The William and Mary women's basketball team erased a 10-point deficit with 11:30 remaining in regulation as they came back for an 81-71 road victory at Radford on Tuesday night. Sophomore Marlena Tremba led all scores and four W&M players in double figures with a season-high 24 points. Senior Jazmen Boone (16 points), freshmen Jenna Green (11 points), and Abby Rendle (10 points) were also in double figures for the Green and Gold. With the win, the Tribe improved to 5-2, while Radford dropped to 2-4.
Radford used a 7-2 run in the opening stages of the game to take a 12-7 lead with 15:26 to play in the first half. Jayda Worthy opened the run with a traditional three-point play. Following a basket by Boone, the Highlanders scored the next four points on baskets by Janayla White and Kiera McIvor.
With the game tied at 19-19, Radford used a 19-9 run to take its largest lead of the half at 35-28. Ayana Avery led the run with six points, while Aisha Foy had five points during the spurt.
W&M closed the half on a 10-4 run to cut the halftime score to 39-38. Boone started the run with a jumper, followed by a triple from freshman Jeanne Gaumont. Following a pair of Radford free throws, sophomore Alexandra Masaquel hit a layup. The Highlanders again extended their lead to four points, but the Tribe got a Hunter free throw and a Masaquel jumper to cut the lead to one before the half expired.
The Highlanders opened the second half on an 11-4 run to extend its lead to eight points with 15:36 remaining. Avery opened the period with a triple. The teams traded baskets the next two times down the floor, before Radford used a 6-0 run for the rest of the spurt. Worthy opened the run with a jumper, followed by a pair of layups by White and McIvor.
After the Tribe cut the lead to five points, Radford was able to extend it lead to 10 points twice. A 5-0 run capped off by a Jordynn Gaymon layup gave RU a 55-45 lead, before a White layup pushed the score to 57-47 with a 11:33 to play.
Trailing by 10-points with 11:33 remaining the Tribe responded with a 14-2 run in just over three minutes. Tremba and Green went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to cut the lead to six, opening the run. Following a layup by Radford, Tremba canned a triple, before Rendle followed with a layup and Green completed a traditional three-point play tying the score, Boone gave the Tribe its first lead since 3-0 with a jumper, before Tremba sunk two more from the stripe to end the run.? After the outburst, the Tribe led 63-59 with 8:13 to play, and never looked back.
After Radford cut the lead to two points, Green stepped up and knocked down a triple from the left corner to ice the game with just over five minutes to play.
W&M was able to build its lead by hitting its free throws down the stretch. The Tribe shot 75.8-percent (25-of-33) from the line.? Tremba knocked nine free throws to lead the Tribe.
Boone finished the game with her second double-double of the season and the third of her career with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tremba tied a career-high with five 3-pointers made. Rendle also enjoyed a career-day setting a career-high with 10 points and matching a career-best with six rebounds. Meanwhile, Green was in double figures for the second time this season, while adding five dimes in the game.
W&M is off to a 5-2 start and has now won three-straight games for the first time since the 2012-13 season - its best mark since the 2008-09 campaign.
The Green and Gold continues its three-game road trip as they travel to Philadelphia to take on La Salle on Saturday, Dec. 6. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. Following a 12-day layoff for exams, the Tribe concludes its road trip at Wofford on Thursday, Dec. 18.
