WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary men's basketball senior
Marcus Thornton was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week after leading the Green and Gold to a 2-0 week, the league announced on Monday. Thornton shared the weekly honor with Hofstra's Ameen Tanksley.
Thornton averaged 22 points per game last week, while shooting 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range (5-of-10) and hitting 11-of-13 from the free throw line. In the Tribe's win over Western Illinois, the 6-4 guard scored 19 points in just 26 minutes as the Green and Gold routed the Leathernecks, 83-49. He was 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range against WIU.
In the Tribe's 66-62 win over defending Southern Conference Champion Wofford, Thornton tallied a season-high 25 points on an efficient 7-of-10 from the field and a 9-of-11 effort from the free throw line. He scored 18 of his game-high 25 in the opening half to pace the Tribe to a 10-point lead at the intermission. With his 25 points effort, Thornton surpassed the 1,600 career point mark and moved into sixth place, along with former Tribe standout Quinn McDowell, on the W&M career scoring list. The contest against Wofford also marked Thornton's 100th career game in a Tribe uniform.
For the year, Thornton ranks third in the CAA at 17 points per game. He also ranks among the league leaders in free throw shooting (eighth at .833), 3-pointers made (11th at 2.0), field goal percentage (12th at .441) and 3-point shooting (14th at .324). Over the Tribe's last four games, he is averaging 19.5 points per game and is shooting 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from 3-point range.
The Tribe is off to its first 5-1 start since the 1992-93 season, following the win over defending Wofford on Saturday. W&M is back in action when it hits the road this week for a pair of contests. The Tribe travel to Richmond for the 200th all-time meeting with the Spiders on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., before heading to Big South favorite High Point on Saturday at 7 p.m.
