Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A dominating first-half performance both offensively and defensively sent the William and Mary men's basketball team to a 83-49 rout of visiting Western Illinois on Tuesday night at Kaplan Arena. W&M shot 66.7 percent in the opening 20 minutes, while limiting the Leathernecks (1-3) to 20 percent shooting. The Tribe closed the first half on a 24-0 run to take a commanding 48-15 lead into the intermission. The Green and Gold won its fourth straight to improve to 4-1 on the year, just the seventh time since 1960 that W&M opened the season with four wins in its first five games.
Senior guard
Marcus Thornton led all scorers and four Tribe players in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field, including a 3-of-6 clip from 3-point range. Junior
Terry Tarpey and sophomore
Daniel Dixon each finished with 14 points in the victory, while sophomore
Omar Prewitt added 13 points. Tarpey was 6-of-9 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, to go with five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Dixon added six rebounds in the win and was 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Prewitt led W&M with three steals.
Defensively, the Tribe was sensational all night, holding the visitors to 26.8 percent (15-of-56) shooting from the field. It marked the lowest field goal percentage for a W&M opponent since the Green and Gold held UNCW to 22.7 percent (15-of-66) on Feb. 11, 2009. The Tribe limited its 12th Division I opponent to fewer than 50 points under head coach
Tony Shaver and the second this season.
For the fourth time in the first five games, Dixon opened the Tribe scoring column with a 3-pointer. Western Illinois briefly took a 4-3 advantage, before W&M ripped of a quick 10-2 run in taking a lead in would never relinquish. Thornton and Dixon each knocked down 3-pointers, before back-to-back buckets from Tarpey extended the Green and Gold lead to 18-9 with 13:37 left.
After a Leatherneck old-fashion 3-point play, W&M scored six straight points all on lay-ups. Thornton converted on the break and then on a drive to the hoop. Prewitt's lay-up at the 11:15 mark gave W&M a 24-12 advantage. In total, the Green and Gold hit 11 of its first 15 shots in opening the double-digit advantage.
Garrett Covington briefly drew the Leathernecks within nine, 24-15, on a 3-pointer with 10:29 left. From that point, it was all Tribe for the remainder of the first 20 minutes. The Green and Gold closed the half on a 24-0 run. W&M turned the game into a runaway thanks to its defense as the Leatherneck misfired of their final 15 shots of the half and turned it over three times.
Six different Tribe players scored during the run and W&M connected on its final six shots of the half. The lead ballooned to 20 points for the first time on a 3-pointer from the left wing by Dixon at the 4:11 mark. Thornton scored five straight points, before Prewitt found redshirt freshman
Jack Whitman for a lay-up to extend the run to 20-0. Prewitt scored the final four points of the half, including a spinning lay-up just before the halftime horn to send W&M to the locker room with a 48-15 advantage.
In the opening 20 minutes, the Green and Gold limited WIU to just 20 percent (6-of-30) from the floor. It marked the second time this season that W&M limited an opponent to 20 percent shooting in the half. In the Tribe's first three home games, W&M has held its opponents to 16, 15 and 15 first-half points. On the offensive end, the Tribe connected on 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the field, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range.
In the second half, Western Illinois could draw no closer than 30 points, while the Green and Gold pushed the lead to its largest at 40 points. After WIU cut the margin to 58-26 with 13:44 remaining on a Covington 3-pointer, W&M scored eight straight points to extend the cushion to 66-26. A Prewitt steal and fast-break dunk started the run, before Tarpey knocked down a 3-pointer. Junior forward
Sean Sheldon pushed the margin to 40 with a pair of free throws at the 10:43 mark.
For the game, W&M shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55), including a 9-of-23 effort from 3-point range (39.1 percent). The Tribe dished out 16 assists and shot 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line. The Green and Gold also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Leathernecks, 45-26. Greg Malinowski chipped in four points, five rebounds and two steals, while Whitman added six rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench.
Along with its 26.8 field goal percentage, the Leathernecks were 7-of-21 from 3-point range (33 percent) and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Covington led WIU with 13 points, but was just 1-of-6 for three points in the opening 20 minutes while being hounded by defensive ace Dixon. Mike Miklusak added 10 points off the bench for Western Illinois.
The Tribe continues its brief two-game homestand with a top-flight mid-major tilt against defending Southern Conference Champion Wofford on Saturday afternoon as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. After the Tribe women's team takes on Longwood at 2 p.m., the Green and Gold men welcome the Terriers at 4:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets to the doubleheader for just $5.
