NORFOLK, Va. ? Senior Jazmen Boone scored a game-high 16 points, and the Tribe nearly erased a 16-point second half ODU lead in a tough 65-58 loss on Monday night in Norfolk. Sophomore Marlena Tremba chipped in her 24th double-digit performance in 31 games with 14 points. With the result, the Tribe falls to 1-1, while the Monarchs improve to 2-0.
ODU opened the game with a 9-2 run. Odegua Oigbokie started the scoring with a layup. Following a Tribe basket, the Monarchs scored seven straight points, with five from Chelisa Painter and a basket by Oigbokie.
The Tribe stormed back with an 8-0 run to take its first lead at 10-9. Tremba buried a triple to start the run, followed by a layup from sophomore Alexandra Masaquel. Another 3-pointer from Tremba capped the run, giving the Green and Gold a one-point lead.
The game stayed within two possessions for the middle of the first half, but then ODU closed out the half on a 17-7 run, taking a 34-26 lead. The spurt was led by Painter, who had six points, while Jennie Simms pushed in four.
Old Dominion jumped out to its largest lead of the night with a 10-2 run to open the second half of play. Minor buried a trey to start the period. Following a Tremba basket, Minor responded with another 3-pointer and Painter and Simms hit back-to-back layups.
W&M answered with a 16-4 run to cut the Monarchs lead to six with 9:43 to play in regulation. Tremba opened the rally with a layup, followed by another lay-in by sophomore Latrice Hunter. After an ODU 3-pointer, the Tribe scored the game's next eight points - four from sophomore Kasey Curtis and jumpers from Hunter and Tremba.? A Monarch free throw pushed the lead back to eight, before Boone ended the run with a layup.
The Monarchs extended their lead back to 12 points, before the College fought back with a 10-0 spurt to cut the lead to two with 4:40 to play in the game. A jumper by freshman Jenna Green opened the run, which was followed up by four straight points from Boone. Freshman Abby Rendle knocked down a jumper, before Boone made down another basket closing the score to 54-52.
ODU was able to close out the game in large part due to a pair of 3-pointers from Minor and Simms. The Monarchs were paced by Simms, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Minor and Painter each had 13 points, while Oigbokie finished with 11.
W&M did force Old Dominion into 25 turnovers off 15 steals. Masaquel had a career-best five steals, while she chipped in six points and eight rebounds. ?Boone had in three steals for the second straight game this season.
The Green and Gold continues its three-game road trip travelling to North Carolina A&T on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. The road swing concludes when W&M heads to High Point on Sunday, Nov. 23. Tipoff for the Sunday matinee is set for 2 p.m.
