Tribe Lax Defeats Hofstra, 12-11, in Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 7, 2013)—The William and Mary lacrosse team earned a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory against Hofstra at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Kyrstin Mackrides scored the game-winning goal on a free position opportunity with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the initial 3-minute overtime segment, while junior goalie Colleen Nofi preserved the victory when she saved a shot on goal by Hofstra's Julia Riemer with just 0:01 remaining. The contest marked the second consecutive season in which W&M (4-8, 1-2) defeated the Pride (7-5, 1-1) in overtime, as it won, 8-7, last year in Hempstead.

Mackrides equaled a career high with five goals – coming on just six shots – while sophomore Ellen Shaffrey totaled three goals and three draw controls. With the effort, Mackrides now ranks sixth on W&M's career goals scored list (122) and ninth on the career points list (150). Junior Taelor Salmon also came up big offensively with two goals and an assist, while junior Jenna Dougherty and sophomore Kaleigh Noon both provided two assists apiece.

In addition to recording the game-winning save, Nofi finished the afternoon with 12 stops and three ground balls. Senior Hannah Clarke was also outstanding defensively and contributed four caused turnovers.

Although the contest was tied at 2-2 following a goal by Hofstra's Casey Kellogg about seven minutes into the contest, the Tribe pulled ahead with a 5-0 run to lead, 7-2, midway through the opening half. Goals by Mackrides bookended the run, while Salmon, Shaffrey and senior Caitlin Murphy also provide goals during the pivotal stretch.

While W&M held HU scoreless for a span of more than 17 minutes, the Pride closed the first half with a pair of goals to trail, 7-4, at the intermission.

After the Tribe tallied the initial score of the second half on goal by Mackrides, Hofstra charged back with a 3-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 14:17 remaining. A goal by freshman Zoe Boger two minutes later increased the margin back to two, but Hofstra responded by scoring three of the next four goals to tie the game at 10-10 with 2:44 remaining.

Each team scored once in the closing minutes, as Shaffrey found the back of the cage on an assist by Dougherty with 1:33 remaining, and Brittain Altomare send the game into overtime with a goal at the 0:39 mark.

Each team took just one shot in overtime, as Mackrides converted the game-winner and Nofi came up with the key save on Riemer's attempt on goal.

Hofstra outshot the Tribe, 25-22, and held advantages in both ground balls (23-18) and draw controls (14-13).

Altomare led HU with four points (3g, 1a), while Riemer totaled three goals and Becky Conto added two goals and seven draw controls.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Towson next Friday at 7 p.m.
