Tribe Lax Edged by Drexel, 11-9

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 23, 2013)—The William and Mary lacrosse team was edged by Drexel, 11-9, at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Friday evening.

The contest was tied at 8-8 midway through the second half, but Drexel (8-3, 1-0) scored three of the game's final four goals to secure the victory.

Seven different players scored for the Tribe (3-8, 0-2), as senior Kyrstin Mackrides (2g, 1a) and sophomore Ellen Shaffrey (2g, 1a) led the squad with three points apiece. Mackrides' performance moved her into a tie for 10th on W&M's all-time lists for both goals (117) and points (145).

Defensively, junior goalie Colleen Nofi posted 12 saves and five ground balls, while senior Brett Hayes contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Although Drexel jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, the Tribe responded with goals by Mackrides and senior Katie Stillwell to even the count with 21:00 showing.

After the teams traded goals twice, the Dragons closed the half with three unanswered scores in the final 7:29 to lead, 7-4, at the intermission.

Each team scored just once during the opening 11 minutes of the second half, but W&M utilized a 3-0 run midway through the stanza to tie the score at 8-8. Senior Caitlin Murphy, Shaffrey and Mackrides all found the back of the cage during the quick scoring stretch that covered just 4:07. Mackrides provided the equalizer after winning a draw and racing directly down the field before tallying a score with 14:31 remaining.

However, DU took the lead for good on a free position goal by Emily Duffey with 11:12 left, and Kelli Joran added goals at 5:05 and 2:49.

Junior Jenna Dougherty recorded a late goal for W&M on a free position opportunity with 0:19 remaining for the game's final score.

Drexel outshot W&M, 31-18, and held narrow edges in ground balls (19-18) and draw controls (12-9).

The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Hofstra on Sunday at 1 p.m.
