Women's Tennis Claims 22nd CAA Championship, Upends UNCW, 4-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship is back in Williamsburg for the 22nd time in the 29-year history of the league as William and Mary bounced UNCW, 4-0, in the title match on Sunday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. After the Green and Gold claimed the doubles point, junior Maria Belaya and freshman Leeza Nemchinov won at the top two singles positions, before junior Jeltje Loomans clinched the championship with a win at No. 4. The Green and Gold earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, its 19th appearance overall, and improved to 17-5 on the year.

The Tribe jumped on top by taking the doubles point, using the same combination as its semifinal victory with wins at the top two slots. It marked the fourth straight match in which the Green and Gold claimed the doubles point. Senior Anik Cepeda and junior Hope Johnson continued their stellar play, winning for the sixth straight time. The Tribe duo won seven of the final eight games, including each of the last four, as Johnson's cross-court volley capped the triumph. Cepeda and Johnson upped their mark to 8-2 at the No. 2 post with their 10th win of the year.

Belaya and Nemchinov clinched the doubles point with a win at the top spot. The duo broke UNCW in its opening game to jump on top and led 3-2, before ripping off the final five games for an 8-2 triumph. Belaya and Nemchinov pushed its ledger to 3-0 with the victory.

In singles action, Belaya and Nemchinov flexed some muscle at the top two positions, pushing the Tribe margin to 3-0. Belaya won convincingly at No. 1, downing Angie Sekely to avenge a three-set loss to the Seahawk player during the team's regular season meeting. The CAA Player of the Year cruised in the opening set, 6-1, before winning the opening five games of the second on the way to a 6-2 triumph. Belaya won her third straight match, pushing her season ledger to 21-11.

Tied at three in the opening set at No. 2, Nemchinov tallied the final three games to take the first, 6-3. The CAA Rookie of the Year carried the momentum over to the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 advantage before closing out the 6-2 victory. It marked Nemchinov's fourth straight win as she upped her season ledger to 23-11, including an 8-2 mark at the No. 2 slot.

Loomans clinched the championship for the Tribe with a straight-sets win at No. 4. After winning the first set, 7-5, the Tribe junior raced out to a 5-0 lead, before serving out the 6-2 win and setting off a Tribe celebration. Loomans won her third straight match and 13th overall, while improving to 12-8 in dual-match play.

The Tribe will await the pairings for the 2013 NCAA Championship Regionals, which are slated to be May 10-13 on campus sites throughout the country.
