NORFOLK, Va. – The William and Mary baseball team fell at Old Dominion, 10-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The setback drops the Green and Gold to 26-15 overall and 9-5 in CAA action, while ODU improves to 20-18 on the season and 10-10 in league action.
Freshman catcher Ryan Hissey led the way at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, which included a run scored. Freshman Thomas Pulisic finished the afternoon with a hit and an RBI. Senior Ryan Brown along with juniors Ryan Lindemuth and Willie Shaw each finished the contest with a hit. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Sarty rounded out the effort with a base hit.
Senior RHP John Farrell (7-1) suffered his first defeat of the season as he allowed seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work. The Andover, Mass., native faced 24 batters over the course of the contest and registered five strikeouts compared to just one walk. Sophomore RHP J.T. Castner and freshman RHP Joseph Gaouette combined to pitch three innings of relief.
The Monarchs got off to a fast start on Saturday afternoon as it jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings of play. Sophomore Josh Eldridge highlighted ODU's five-run second inning with a grand slam over the right field wall.
In the top of the eighth, W&M was poised for a multi-run inning as it loaded the bases before ODU registered an out. However, the Monarch's retired the next three batters as it kept the Green and Gold off of the scoreboard.
Old Dominion extended its advantage to 10-0 after plating a trio of runs in the bottom half of the eighth. Sophomore Michael Perez's two-run home run to straight away center field highlighted the three-run frame.
W&M got on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth. Hissey led the inning off with a double to center field and later scored on Pulisic's single through the middle of the infield.
