UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (April 19, 2013)—Three members of the William and Mary men's gymnastics team posted outstanding performances during session one on the first day of action at the NCAA Championships hosted by Penn State and advanced to tomorrow's second round of competition. The impressive efforts mark the first time W&M has qualified three gymnasts to the second day of the national meet.
Junior Daniel Potemski advanced to tomorrow's all-around final, while junior Landon Funiciello and freshman Neal Courter will move on to round two on rings and vault, respectively. While the all-around title will be determined tomorrow, the top 10 individuals in each event tomorrow will qualify for Sunday's finals.
Competing in all-around, Potemski was the top scorer from a non-qualifying team during the opening session and placed second overall in the group with an 83.7.
Funiciello earned a 15.3 on rings, which was the top score from a non-qualifying team and tied for second overall in the session. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native also competed on parallel bars (12th; 14.4), vault (T22nd; 14.45) and floor (T25th; 14.35).
Courter earned a career-high 15.3 on vault, which tied for first among all competitors in Friday's opening session. Additionally, he tied for 19th on floor (14.5) and placed 30th on high bar (12.9).
Junior Sam Patterson, sophomore Michael Deitz and sophomore Jason Wang also competed as individuals on Friday. Wang tied for 25th on pommel horse (12.85), while Dietz finished 28th on high bar (13.15) and Patterson placed 32nd on parallel bars (13.2).
The second round of competition will begin on Saturday at 7 p.m.
