COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 33 William and Mary women's tennis team returned to
its winning ways with a 4-3 victory at Maryland on Sunday afternoon. One day
after seeing its seven-match winning streak snapped, the Tribe won the doubles
point, before receiving singles wins from freshman

Hope Johnson. The Green and Gold pushed its record to 12-3
with the victory, while Maryland fell to 5-7.
The Tribe took the doubles point with strong performances at
the top two positions. The No. 5-ranked team in the country of juniors
Maria
Belaya and
Jeltje Loomans rolled to its 10th straight win, upending Vroni Van
Berlo and Sarah Gealer, 8-3, at the top spot. The Tribe duo improved to 21-2 on the year. Cepeda and Johnson tallied their
fourth win and improved to 2-2 in dual-match play with an 8-1 win over Nataliya
Bredikhina and Olga Bredikhina at the No. 2 slot.
W&M pushed its lead to 3-0 with straight set singles wins
at No. 2 and No. 4, before the balance of the match came down to a four
three-set matches. Nemchinov and Cepeda continued their strong singles play as
both improved to 13-2 in dual match play, while increasing their win streaks to
nine and eight, respectively. At No. 2, Nemchinov improved to 19-9 overall and
a perfect 4-0 at the post with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Gealer. Cepeda pushed her
team-best singles mark to 21-11, dominating Olga Gaistruk, 6-0, 6-2, at the No.
4 position.
Johnson pulled out a three-set win at No. 5 to clinch the
Tribe victory, while the Terrapins claimed third sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No.
6. After taking the opening set, 6-1, from Gabriela Srodowski, Johnson could
not maintain the momentum as the Terp player took the second set, 6-2. The
Tribe junior bounced back with a 6-4 victory in the third to take the match and
clinch the team triumph. Johnson won her 12th match of the season and her
seventh in the dual-match campaign.
The Tribe continues its road trip with a pair of matches in
Houston, Texas, March 23-24. W&M meet the No. 29 Rice at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, March 23, before heading across town to face Houston on Sunday, March
24, at 11 a.m.
