Tribe Baseball Takes Delaware Series with 4-2 Win

NEWARK, Del. - The William and Mary baseball team scored a pair of runs in the fourth and seventh innings en route to a 4-2 series clinching victory at Delaware on Sunday afternoon and Bob Hannah Stadium.  The win improves W&M's record to 12-8 overall and 2-1 in CAA play, while Delaware falls to 10-8 on the year and 3-3 in league action.

At the plate, junior left fielder Willie Shaw led the attack with a hit, an RBI and a run scored, while freshman catcher Ryan Hissey also registered a run batted in.  Junior Ryan Lindemuth connected on two hits and a run scored, while senior center fielder Ryan Brown and senior designated hitter Jackson Shaver each tallied a hit and a run scored.

Sophomore LHP Jason Inghram (2-2) earned the win after working seven innings in which the Chesapeake, Va., native allowed just one earned run on four hits while posting nine strikeouts.  Senior LHP Matt Wainman worked a scoreless eighth while freshman Mitchell Aker picked up his fourth save of the season after recording the last three outs in the ninth.

In the top of the fourth, the Green and Gold went ahead 2-0 after plating runs on a wild pitch and single.  Shaver got things going with a leadoff triple to right field and later scored W&M's first run of the afternoon on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Hissey slugged a single into right field, which drove in Shaw from third.

Delaware answered with a run in the bottom half as designated hitter Jimmy Yezzo connected on a solo home run over the right field wall.

W&M extended its advantage to 4-1 after putting up a two-spot in the seventh.  Lindemuth led off the frame with a single through the right side and later scored on Shaw's one-out single to right field, making the tally 3-1 in favor of W&M.  With two outs, Delaware was poised to end the inning allowing just run one run.  However, Williams reached base on an error by the UD shortstop, which allowed Brown to score from third for W&M's fourth run of the afternoon.

Delaware made a final rally in the bottom of the ninth, as Ty Warrington's two-out single through the middle of the infield plated the Blue Hens' second run of the contest.  However, with runners on first and second, Aker got the go ahead run to fly out to left field as W&M captured the series with the 4-2 win.

Tribe Baseball returns to action on Wednesday, March 20, as it welcomes Longwood to Plumeri Park.  Wednesday's first pitch in Williamsburg, Va., is slated for 7 p.m. and fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live video and stats.
