UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -
The William and Mary women's basketball team fell to Drexel, 65-31, in
quarterfinal action of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament on
Friday night at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Senior Taylor Hilton led the Green and Gold
with her third career double-double, which consisted of 15 points and 10
rebounds as the Tribe closes out the season with an overall record of
8-22. Drexel upped its record to 21-9 on
the year as it advances to face James Madison in Saturday's second semifinal
game slated to get underway at 4:30 p.m.
Five members of the Green and Gold represented the Tribe for
the final time on Friday night. Seniors
Janine Aldridge, Emily Correal, Taylor Hilton, Jaclyn McKenna and Chanel
Murchison played in a W&M uniform one last time.
Aldridge finishes a decorated career ranking first in school
history and fifth in CAA history in 3-pointers made (304), while her 260 career
steals are tops in the W&M record books.
Correal, who established a new school record with her 114th career start
on Friday night, finishes her career ranking sixth on W&M's all-time
scoring list with 1,349 career points.
Sophomore Kyla Kerstetter netted six points and pulled down
two rebounds, while junior Kaitlyn Mathieu finished the night with seven
points.
In the early going, both squads traded buckets as Hilton's
reverse layup at the 15:20 mark got W&M to within 6-5.
However, the Dragons took control of the opening stanza
courtesy of a 15-0 run, which propelled Drexel to a 21-5 advantage. Mathieu's lay up at the 9:30 juncture snapped
the run but Drexel answered with seven consecutive points as its lead swelled
to 28-7.
The Green and Gold answered with consecutive buckets, both
coming from Hilton, as W&M cut the deficit to 28-11. Once again, Drexel answered with eight
consecutive points as it went into the locker rooms with a 36-11 lead at
intermission.
Second half action opened with the Dragons scoring nine of
the first 11 points as it commanded a 45-13 lead with 16:51 left to play. Hilton shined in the final 20 minutes of
action as she netted nine of her team-high 15 points in the final stanza.
Taylor Wootton and Hollie Mershon led Drexel with 17 and 11
points, respectively.
