NEWARK, Del. - The
William and Mary baseball team opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a
20-3 setback at Delaware on Friday afternoon.
W&M struck first with a run in the opening inning, but the Blue Hens
countered with multi-run innings as it built a 10-1 advantage after three
innings of play en route to the win. The
setback drops the Green and Gold to 10-8 overall and 0-1 in CAA play, while
Delaware improves to 10-6 on the season and 3-1 in league action.
The Green and Gold got on the scoreboard first on Friday
afternoon as it plated a run in the opening frame. Junior second baseman Ryan Lindemuth led off
the contest with a single to left field and later advanced to third on
sophomore first baseman Michael Katz's single to left field. Junior left fielder Willie Shaw followed Katz
with W&M's third single of the inning, to right field, which pushed across Lindemuth
as W&M grabbed the early 1-0 lead.
Delaware countered with three runs in the bottom half as
Zach Lopes' one-out single to third base pushed across UD's second and third
runs of the frame.
The Blue Hens took control of the contest after plating
three runs in the second followed by four more runs in the third. Of Delaware's seven runs in the two-inning
span only three were earned.
W&M plated two runs in the ninth, making the final
tally, 20-3. With two outs and the bases
loaded, freshman Thomas Pulisic's walk pushed across senior designated hitter
Jackson Shaver for the Tribe's second run of the afternoon. The Tribe plated the its third run of the day
when freshman David Belt scored from third on a Delaware wild pitch.
At the plate, Lindemuth went 2-for-4 with a run scored,
while Shaw finished the afternoon with an RBI.
Shaver recorded a hit and a run scored, while Pulisic registered a run
batted. Senior RHP Brett Koehler (2-2)
took the loss as he struck out three, while allowing six earned runs in five
innings of work.
The series continues tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch
from Bob Hannah Stadium slated for 1 p.m.
