NORFOLK, Va. - In
a tightly contest game that saw 10 ties and six lead changes, the William and
Mary women's basketball team fell at Old Dominion, 75-64, on Thursday night at
the Ted Constant Center. With 11:08 left
to play in regulation, senior Janine Aldridge's fast-break bucket knotted the
affair up at 50. However, the Monarchs
scored 10 of the next 14 points as it fended off a tenacious Tribe squad for
the Colonial Athletic Association victory.
The setback drops W&M to 6-19 overall and 4-10 in CAA play, while
Old Dominion improves to 18-9 on the year and 9-6 in league action.
Senior Emily Correal paced the Green and Gold with 26 points
and eight rebounds. The Venetia, Pa.,
native has now posted 17 20-point performances in her career, which is tied for
fourth all-time in school history.
Sophomore Kyla Kerstetter filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, seven
rebounds and three assists, while Aldridge finished the contest with nine
points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Senior Taylor Hilton rounded out the Tribe effort with seven points and
five rebounds.
The Green and Gold finished the night shooting 45.6 percent
(26-of-57) from the floor and 20 percent (3-of-15) from 3-point range. Once again, W&M got a solid effort from
its bench in the way of 15 points. The
Tribe finished the contest with 36 points in the paint and 20 points off of 20
Old Dominion turnovers.
In first half action, the Monarch's jumped out to an early
advantage as Shae Kelley's conventional 3-point play gave ODU an 11-4 advantage
at the 15.24 mark. Senior Chanel
Murchison's lay up off an assist from sophomore Anna Kestler cut the deficit to
four, 18-14, at the 9:37 juncture.
Murchison finished the night with four points on 2-of-2 shooting from
the field, while Kestler ended the contest with two rebounds.
With Old Dominion holding onto a 27-21 lead, the Tribe exploded
an a quick 8-0 burst as senior Jaclyn McKenna's layup gave the Tribe a 29-27
lead with 3:44 left to play in the half.
The run was ignited by two Correal free-throws at the 4:59 mark, while Hilton
and sophomore Jazmen Boone netted buckets during the stretch. With 26 seconds left in the half, Boone's
jumper proved to be the final points of the stanza, but Old Dominion held the
slim halftime lead, 35-33.
The Green and Gold started the final 20 minutes of action on
a tear as it took a four-point advantage, 39-35, at the 17:32 mark courtesy of
six unanswered points. Fueling the burst
was an unyielding defensive effort along with well executed buckets from
Correal and Hilton. Correal scored the
frame's opening four points, while Hilton's layup gave the Green and Gold the
four-point margin.
After the two squads traded buckets, it was Old Dominion who
held a 48-43 lead with 13:00 left to play.
On the Tribe's next possession, Aldridge's trifecta got W&M to
within 48-46 with 12:30 remaining. After
another defensive stop, the Massapequa, N.Y., native tied the tilt, 48-48, for
the ninth time with a coast-to-coast lay up at the 11:50 mark.
Mairi Buchan's bucket at the 11:36 mark gave ODU the
two-point edge, 50-48. However, as it
had done all night, the Tribe responded on its ensuing possession. Aldridge tied the contest for the 10th and
final time at 50 as the College's all-time leader in 3-pointers made (295) connected
on another fast-break layup. The
Monarch's seized control of the contest as it scored 10 of the next 14 points,
and with 6:01 left in regulation, ODU owned a 60-54 lead.
Correal's bucket inside the paint at the 5:54 mark cut the
deficit to four, 60-56, but that's as close as W&M got to over taking the
ODU advantage. Her 26th point of the
night got the Tribe to within 67-62 with 2:32 left to go but ODU put the contest
out of reach with a 6-0 spurt.
Jackie Cook led ODU with 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting from
the floor, while Shae Kelley finished the contest with 17 points and 10
rebounds. For the game, Old Dominion
shot 24-of-52 (46.2 percent) from the floor and 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from
3-point range.
The Tribe returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 24, as it
