Tribe Baseball Falls at No. 25 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team fell at 25th-ranked Virginia, 11-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field.  The setback drops the Tribe to 1-3 on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 4-0 with the win.

Senior Ryan Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while freshman Thomas Pulisic drove in a run on a pinch-hit single in the ninth.  Senior Kevin Nutter tallied two hits in four at bats, as the Vienna, Va., native led off the contest with a single to right field.  Rounding out the W&M effort at the plate were senior Ryan Brown, junior Ryan Lindemuth and sophomore Michael Katz, who each registered a hit.

Senior LHP Matt Wainman (0-1) took the loss in five innings of work, while Virginia's RHP Nick Howard (1-0) earned the win.

After three scoreless innings of baseball, Virginia got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth.  After the Tribe retired the first two batters of the frame, the Cavaliers plated three runs on consecutive two-out doubles.

The Cavaliers tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Kenny Towns' two-run home run to left field with two outs gave Virginia a 6-0 advantage.  In the bottom of the sixth, Colin Harrington extended the Virginia margin, 8-0, with a two-run home run to left field.  Virginia plated three more insurance runs before the Tribe answered with a pair of runs in the ninth.

Lindemuth led off the final frame with a walk and later advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Junior Bobby Klein, who came in as a pinch hitter, followed Lindemuth with a base-on-balls.  With no outs and runners on first and second, Williams plated Lindemuth and moved Klein to third with a double down the left field chalk.  Pulisic proceeded to push across Klein for the Tribe's second run of the contest with a groundout to shortstop.

Tribe baseball opens the home portion of its 2013 schedule this weekend with a three-game series against the Siena Saints.  The series gets underway at Plumeri Park with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader slated to start at noon.  Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live stats.
