CLEMSON, S.C. - As
it had done the day before, the William and Mary baseball team struck first
against Clemson, as the Tribe went ahead, 1-0, in the early stages of the
fourth inning. However, the Tigers
countered with runs in the late innings as Clemson defeated W&M, 12-2, on
Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Green and Gold falls to 1-2 overall, while Clemson upped its mark to
2-1 on the season.
Sophomore LHP Jason Inghram (0-1) recorded three strikeouts
in six innings of work. Through five
innings of action, the Chesapeake, Va., native was dealing, as he hadn't
allowed a run to cross home plate.
However, Clemson managed to plate three batters off the southpaw in the
bottom half of the sixth en route to the win.
At the plate, freshman catcher Ryan Hissey tallied a hit and
an RBI, while senior shortstop Ryan Williams finished the afternoon with a hit
and a run batted in. Senior Kevin Nutter
and sophomore Michael Katz rounded out the W&M output at the plate with a
hit apiece.
For the second consecutive day, the Green and Gold got on
the scoreboard first. In the top of the
fourth, Katz led the inning off with a single to center field. The Falls Church, Va., native moved himself
into scoring position after swiping second base. With one out, Hissey drove in the freshman
All-American with a sacrifice fly to deep left field.
Clemson countered as it pushed across three runs in the
bottom half of the sixth. With the
contest still in doubt, the Tigers put the game out of reach as it plated six
runs in the seventh. Steve Wilkerson
highlighted the six run frame with a bases clearing double to left field, which
pushed across three Tigers. Clemson
tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth inning, all on two-out base
hits.
The Green and Gold got back on the scoreboard, as it was
down to its last out in the ninth inning.
After Hissey smashed a two-out double to left center field, Williams
plated the West Chester, Pa., native with a double down the left field line.
