WEST POINT, N.Y. (Feb.
1, 2013) - The No. 11 William and Mary men's gymnastics team placed third
at the West Point Open hosted by Army on Friday evening. No. 13 Temple claimed
the team title with a 417.4 and was followed by Army (416.1), W&M (411.4),
Springfield (401.4), Navy (398.15), Arizona State (395.5) and Brockport
(175.350).
Highlighting the Tribe's individual performances was junior
Landon Funiciello, who posted the meet's top score on parallel bars (14.95) and
tied for first on rings (15.1). His mark on parallel bars ties for the top
score in the program's record book. Additionally, freshman Neal Courter claimed
an event title on vault with a career-high 14.75.
Led by Courter's third-place performance on floor (14.8),
W&M earned a team score of 69.5 in the event. In addition to being a career
high, Courter's mark ranks fourth in the Tribe's record book. Funiciello also
notched a top-10 finish in the event at the meet with a 14.3 to place eighth.
W&M posted the meet's top team score on pommel horse
with a season-best 69.8. Sophomore Peter Ten Eyck was the squad's top performer
in the event and placed third with a career-high 14.4, which ranks sixth in the
program's record book. Freshman Keaton Ackerman (14.15) and junior Daniel
Potemski (14.1) also garnered top-10 finishes at the competition, while
Ackerman's score ranks ninth all-time at W&M.
En route to tying for first on rings with a 15.1, Funiciello
helped the College record a 67.85 in the event. Potemski also came up big with
a 14.05 to place eighth.
Courter's winning score of 14.75 on vault helped W&M
register a team total of 70.45 in the event. In addition to being the meet's
top score on vault, Courter's impressive mark ranks third in W&M's record
book. Sophomore Michael Deitz also tallied a top-10 finish in the event with a
14.15.
As it did on pommel horse, the Tribe posted a season-high on
parallel bars (70.4) en route to recording the top team score in the event.
Funiciello's school-record-tying score of 14.95 helped him win the individual
event title, while sophomore J.J. Jindra tied for fourth with a 14.3, which
ranks ninth in W&M's record book. Potemski also came up big and placed
sixth with a 14.25.
Potemski was W&M's top finisher on high bar with a 13.85
and tied for third, while Deitz's 13.35 placed ninth. As a team, the Tribe
earned a 63.5 in the event.
Ackerman was the College's lone all-around competitor and
earned a career-high 80.65 to place fifth. Additionally, the mark ranks sixth
all-time at W&M.
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at Temple
on Feb. 16.
