Tribe Defeats Georgia State, 35-3, on Family Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Sept. 29, 2012) - The William and Mary football team capitalized off seven Georgia State turnovers to earn a 35-3 victory against the Panthers on Saturday evening at Zable Stadium.

W&M (1-4, 1-2) scored four of its five touchdowns off GSU's (0-5) turnovers and held the Panthers scoreless during the final three quarters. Additionally, the College outgained Georgia State, 413-249, and piled up 312 rushing yards.

Individually, sophomore running back Keith McBride II totaled a career-high 163 rushing yards on 25 carries with a pair of touchdowns, while sophomore running back Darnell Laws rushed for 67 yards on six carries with a score. Sophomore quarterback Raphael Ortiz was efficient directing the offense, completing 8-of-13 passes for 101 yards, while also rushing for a pair of scores.

Defensively, senior safety Brian Thompson, junior safety Jerome Couplin III, sophomore safety Ivan Tagoe and junior defensive back Ryan Smith all registered interceptions, while junior defensive end Bryan Stinnie, sophomore defensive tackle Jasper Coleman and sophomore cornerback Frank Tamakloe all posted fumble recoveries.

GSU got on the scoreboard first with a 37-yard field goal by Wil Lutz midway through the opening quarter.

W&M had an opportunity to tie the score on its ensuing possession, but junior Drake Kuhn's 45-yard field goal attempt missed wide right. The kick would have equaled the longest made field goal of his career.

An 11-yard touchdown run by McBride gave the Tribe a 7-3 lead midway through the second quarter. The Collierville, Tenn., native's first touchdown of the night capped off a six-play, 56-yard drive that lasted just 2:29 and began when Coleman recovered a fumble caused by senior linebacker Jabrel Mines.

The College increased the lead to 14-3 when Ortiz found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run with 0:18 remaining in the first half. The sophomore quarterback scored just four plays after Tamakloe recovered a muffed GSU punt at the Panthers' 11-yard line.

Four of Georgia State's seven turnovers came in the opening half, while W&M outgained GSU, 170-131, in the opening 30 minutes.

Although W&M was forced to punt on its opening possession of the second half, it scored touchdowns on its next three possessions.

Laws put the College ahead, 21-3, with a 26-yard touchdown run with 5:36 showing in the third quarter. The quick four-play, 52-yard drive lasted just 1:46 and began after junior defensive tackle George Beerhalter sacked GSU quarterback Ronnie Bell and forced a fumble that was recovered by Stinnie.

Following an interception by Tagoe in the end zone that halted a GSU drive, W&M marched 80 yard in nine plays to increase the margin to 28-3 with a 36-yard touchdown run by McBride.

Ortiz tacked on the contest's final score, his second of the night, on a 6-yard run with 7:22 remaining.

Georgia State was led offensively by running back Donald Russell, who totaled 107 rushing yards on 21 carries. Bell finished the contest 13-of-26 for 157 yards with four interceptions.

The Tribe will return to action next Saturday when it plays at Penn.
