The No. 20-ranked William and Mary field hockey team rebounded well from Friday's disappointing loss this afternoon, recording a 1-0 shutout at Hofstra to get back on track in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the CAA with the win, while the Pride fell to 5-5 and 0-2 in league play.
Box Score
W&M patiently outlasted an early Hofstra barrage to score the first (and eventually only) goal of the match midway through the 20th minute. The Tribe drew a penalty corner, and senior captain
Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, Va.) launched a shot toward the post from high in the circle. Classmate
Leah Zamesnik (Norfolk, Va.) got the head of her stick onto the ball, tipping it past the goalkeeper and in for her second goal of the season. It was also the fifth game-winner of Zamesnik's career, lifting her to a tie for 11th all-time in school history.
The fact that that was the only goal of the game is in large part due to the stellar defensive effort by senior goalkeeper
Elizabeth Frey (Virginia Beach, Va.). Frey made a season-high nine saves, including five in the first half, in recording her fifth win and third shutout of the year.
William and Mary returns home for its next match, taking on Delaware at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28.
