WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary men's soccer team defeated Richmond, 3-0, Saturday night from
Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Senior Ben Anderson netted an early first-half penalty kick score, while
junior Roshan Patel and sophomore Chris Albiston recorded goals in the
second-half, as the Tribe pulled away in the decisive three-goal victory. The win improves W&M's record to 1-1-1 on
the season, while the Spiders fall to 1-2 on the year.
In first-half action, W&M got on the scoreboard in the
sixth minute after a Richmond defender pushed junior Chris Perez to the ground
on the right inline inside the box. On
the ensuing penalty kick, Anderson drilled a shot past Richmond's sophomore
Thomas Hand, who went the wrong way in anticipation. It marked Anderson's sixth career goal and third
game-winner. For the half, the College
registered five shots and three corner kicks.
Sophomore Bennett Jones ended the first-half registering two saves.
The Green and Gold started to distance itself from its in-state
rival with a goal in the 58th minute. W&M's
second score of the evening culminated when Patel headed in a high and bending
corner kick from Anderson. Albiston
tacked on the Green and Gold's last tally on the counter attack finishing
inside the right post from inside the 18 off of an assist from sophomore Josh West.
For the night, the Tribe outshot the Spiders, 20-15. The College held the upper hand in shots on
goal, 8-5, and corner kicks, 9-7. Jones
finished the night with five saves, getting a stout performance from W&M's
backline of junior's Will Smith and Roshan Patel along with sophomores Marcus
Luster and Michael Teiman. It marked
Jones' second shutout in three games this season.
The Tribe returns to action at St. John's on Saturday, Sept.
8, in an 8 p.m. affair against the Red Storm.
