WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team defeated Longwood University, 13-1, Monday night
from Plumeri Park. In the early going,
W&M raced out to a 7-0 lead after just three innings of play as it cruised
to the 12-run victory. With the win, the
College improves to 29-23 on the year, while Longwood falls to 23-20 on the
season.
Senior RHP Jay McCarthy (4-3) earned
his fourth win of the season. In all,
McCarthy pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. Senior's Chris Yates and Garrison Sarrett
combined to pitch a scoreless seventh and eight. The duo allowed no runs and no hits in two
innings of action. Junior reliever Brett Goodloe worked the ninth, surrendering no runs on just one hit. Longwood's junior RHP Kyler Morgan (5-6) took
the loss.
Freshman first baseman Michael Katz
went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a home run to lead
W&M. His fourth-inning home run was
his 10th of the season. Sophomore third
baseman Ryan Lindemuth tallied three runs batted in on two hits, while senior designated
hitter Sean Aiken recorded two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher Devin White finished the
evening going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Junior infielder's Kevin Nutter and Ryan Williams each notched an RBI to round out the offensive output.
W&M struck first with a pair of
runs in the opening frame. After Nutter
reached base after being hit by a Morgan pitch, the Vienna, Va., native
advanced to third base after swiping second followed by a Lindemuth
groundout. Katz proceeded to drive in
Nutter after ripping a single through the middle of the infield. The College's second run of the frame
culminated on an Aiken infield single to third, which plated Katz as the Tribe
jumped out to an early, 2-0, advantage.
In the bottom of the second, the Tribe
tacked on a run as it extended its margin to 3-0. White got the frame started with a leadoff
double down the right field line and later scored on a Nutter sacrifice fly out
to left field, giving W&M a three run advantage.
The College pushed its cushion to 7-0
after plating four runs in the bottom half of the third. White highlighted the four-run inning with a
two-run home run to left field, which plated the Tribe's sixth and seventh runs
of the evening.
In the bottom half of the fourth, Katz
made the score 10-0 with one swing of the bat.
After Nutter and Lindemuth reached base with singles to the outfield,
Katz drove in the pair with home run to left field.
Longwood got on the scoreboard in the
top of the fifth. With two outs,
sophomore catcher Scott Burkett plated classmate third baseman Alex Owens with
a single through the middle.
With the score now 10-1 in the bottom
of the seventh, W&M plated three more runs as it pushed the final score to
13-1. With the bases loaded, Lindemuth
belted a bases clearing triple to the center field wall as W&M finished off
the season sweep of the Lancers.
Tribe baseball returns to action
tomorrow as it travels to Arlington, Va., for a contest against George
Washington slated to get underway at 6 p.m.
