WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team dropped a, 4-3, decision to UNCW in its series
finale Saturday afternoon from Plumeri Park.
W&M jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Seahawks responded with
four unanswered runs as it downed the Tribe in consecutive one run affairs. For the year, the Green and Gold falls to
28-23 overall and 11-16 in CAA action, while UNCW improves to 32-19 on the
season and 22-5 in league action.
Senior RHP Matt Davenport (6-5) pitched 6.1 innings in the
loss. The Chesapeake, Va., native
allowed just two earned runs on eight hits, while fanning five Seahawks. Junior LHP Matt Wainman saw 2.1 innings of
action in relief, allowing no runs on just one hit. UNCW's Junior RHP Tom Timoney (2-1) earned
the victory, while closer, sophomore RHP William Prince recorded his fourth
save of the season.
At the plate, junior second baseman Kevin Nutter went
2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the W&M attack. Freshman first baseman Michael Katz tallied
three hits on the afternoon, while senior left fielder Tadd Bower recorded a
hit and a run batted in. Sophomore third
baseman Ryan Lindemuth recorded an RBI, while senior's Stephen Arcure and Chris
Forsten each tallied a run scored.
W&M jumped out to an early, 1-0, lead after pushing
across a run in the first inning. Nutter
led off the frame with a single to the UNCW shortstop, and after UNCW secured
the inning's first out, Katz followed with a single through the right side,
which advanced Nutter to third. With one
out, Bower drove in Nutter after slicing a single into left field.
In the bottom of the fourth, the College extended its lead
to 3-0 after plating a pair of runs in the inning. With one out, Arcure reached base after being
hit by a pitch. Forsten followed with a
single to center field, advancing Arcure to second in the process. The Tribe then loaded the bases after the
Wilmington starter plunked junior center fielder Ryan Brown. With one out and the bases loaded, Nutter
recorded the base-on-balls RBI as W&M made the score 2-0. Lindemuth plated Forsten for the Tribe's
third run of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly to right field.
UNCW responded with three runs in the top of the fifth as it
tied the contest at 3-3. Of the Seahawk's
three runs in the frame only one was earned.
The Seahawks took a, 4-3, lead after plating a run in the
top half of the seventh. Senior center
fielder Andrew Cain drove in junior right fielder Tyler Molinaro with a triple
to left center field.
In bottom of the ninth, W&M put the tying run on, but
was unable to push across the run. With
two outs, Nutter laced a single into left field. However, Prince retired the next Tribe batter
as UNCW preserved the one run victory.
Tribe baseball will return to action this Monday, May 14, as
it welcomes Longwood University to Plumeri Park for an affair slated to get
underway at 7 p.m. Monday's contest
against the Lancers will be the College's last home game of the 2012 season, as
