UNCW Edges Tribe Baseball, 4-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team fell to UNCW, 4-1, Thursday night from Plumeri Park.  After the Seahawks raced out to an early three-run advantage, W&M responded with a run, but the Tribe wasn't able to further capitalize on early opportunities in the defeat.  For the year, W&M falls to 28-21 overall and 11-14 in CAA action, while UNCW improves to 30-19 on the season and 20-5 in league play.

At the plate, junior second baseman Kevin Nutter went 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead the College.  Sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth tallied two hits and a run batted in, while senior left fielder Stephen Arcure finished the night going 2-for-4.   Junior center fielder Ryan Brown and classmate, shortstop Ryan Williams each recorded a hit on the evening.

Junior RHP Brett Koehler (6-2) took the loss as he pitched seven innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, while tallying six strikeouts.  Senior RHP Matt Davenport and classmate Chris Yates combined to pitch two innings of relief.  The pair allowed no runs on just one hit.  UNCW's senior RHP Tyler McSwain (8-3) notched the win.  McSwain saw 6.1 innings of action, as he allowed one earned run on 11 hits.

UNCW struck first as it plated a pair of runs in the opening frame.  Junior first baseman Hunter Ridge put the Seahawks up, 2-0, after connecting on a home run to right field.

The Green Gold positioned itself nicely in the bottom half as it was on the verge of answering the UNCW two-run frame.   Nutter got the Tribe going with a leadoff single to left center field.  After UNCW recorded the first out, Lindemuth followed with an infield single to Wilmington's shortstop.  Freshman first baseman Michael Katz loaded the bases up after being plunked by McSwain.  With one out and the bases loaded, the Seahawks escaped the frame allowing no runs.

In the top half of the third, the Seahawks went ahead, 3-0, after scoring a run in the inning.  Junior right fielder Tyler Molinaro connected on a solo home run to right field, giving UNCW a three-run advantage.

W&M responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  After Nutter reached base with a single to left center field, Lindemuth plated the Vienna, Va., native with a single through the left side, cutting the UNCW lead to 3-1.

The Seahawks extended their advantage to 4-1 after senior shortstop Jake Koenig hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore pinch hitter Devin White gave the College life with a one out single to center field.  However, Wilmington's closer, sophomore RHP Ricky Holden retired the next two W&M batters to preserve the, 4-1, win.

The College will continue its series against UNCW tomorrow with the first pitch from Plumeri Park scheduled for 7 p.m.  Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live audio and stats.
