The William and Mary women's track and field team won two events Saturday at the 47th Annual Colonial Relays, finishing ninth out of 27 teams with 44 points. Villanova won the team championship with 152 points, well ahead of second-place Delaware (90). Overall, the Tribe had two ECAC-qualifying performances, two wins, and two all-time top performances.
Discus Throw
In the discus throw, junior
Natalie Baird (Sterling, Va.) re-qualified herself for the ECAC Championships by finishing third overall at 43.73 meters (143-6).
Shot Put
Baird also competed in the shot put, taking sixth with a put of 12.53m (41-1.5). Along with her third-place finish in the hammer throw on Thursday, Baird was personally responsible for over a third of the Tribe's team points (15 of 44).
4x800m Relay
The College also had an ECAC qualification in the 4x800m relay, taking sixth in the race at 9:13.36. The qualifying squad included
Olivia Harding (Roanoke, Va.),
Brittany Sevachko (Centreville, Va.),
Avery Mattingly (Blacksburg, Va.), and
Maggie Gutierrez (Purcellville, Va.).
4x1,500m Relay
In the 4x1,500m relay, the Tribe ran the fifth-fastest time ever in school history and finished second overall in 18:30.83. Junior
Katie Buenaga (Greenville, Del.) ran the lead-off leg before handing the baton to
Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.). Freshman
Jess Cygan (Bethelehem, Pa.) was third on the team, and
Michelle Britto (Woodbridge, Va.) ran the anchor leg.
Pole Vault
Saturday also saw the unseeded section of the pole vault, won by freshman
Nina Ullom (Chantilly, Va.) at a lifetime-best height of 3.50m (11-5.75). Ullom now ranks ninth in school history outdoors.
Triple Jump
In the unseeded triple jump, the Tribe went 1-2 with two impressive performances. Sophomore
Nicole Dory (Fort Worth, Texas) was the winner of the section, leaping 11.25m (36-11), and senior
Lynnie Bresnahan (Orange, Va.) hit the sandbox at 11.18m (36-8.25) for second overall.
3,000m Run
The day started for W&M on the track with the 3,000m run, where freshman
Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored four team points with her fifth-place time of 10:12.78.
Distance Medley Relay
W&M got another team point in the DMR, placing eighth overall in 12:14.34. Sophomore
Clarissa Schick (Richmond, Va.) ran the opening 1,200m leg, before handing off to freshman
Sarah Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.). Katz' classmate,
Heather Clagett (Norfolk, Va.), was third on the track with the 800m run, and
Heather Beichner (Cary, N.C.) brought the baton home on the anchor 1,600m leg.
Overall Colonial Relays Notes
There were 30 ECAC qualifying performances on Saturday, bringing the meet-long total to 93 ... Georgetown won the 4x800m relay in 8:45.08, breaking the meet and stadium records the Hoyas had set last year of 8:45.80.
