WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 1, 2012) - The
William and Mary lacrosse team fell to Old Dominion, 14-10, in both teams'
conference opener at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday
afternoon.
W&M (2-9,
0-1) led by a goal at halftime, but ODU (4-7, 1-0) outscored the Tribe 9-4 in
the second half to earn the victory.
The College
utilized a balanced offensive attack, as seven different players scored at
least one goal. Sophomore Taelor Salmon led the Tribe with four points (2g,
2a), while junior Kyrstin Mackrides (2g, 1a) and senior Maggie Anderson (2g)
also found the back of the cage multiple times.
Sophomore
Hannah Clarke equaled a career high with six draw controls, while senior Lauren Binzer totaled three en route to helping the Tribe earn a 16-10 advantage in
draws.
Senior Sarah Mulvey led W&M defensively and registered a team-high three caused
turnovers and four ground balls.
The Tribe
opened the contest playing well and scored three of the first four goals to
take a 3-1 advantage midway through the first half. Anderson provided the
initial goal off an assist from Mackrides just 2:10 into play, while freshman
Ellen Shaffrey utilized an assist from Salmon to score at the 17:24 mark.
Salmon tallied her first goal of the afternoon shortly thereafter off an assist
from sophomore Jenna Dougherty with 13:37 showing.
ODU responded
with a 3-1 run of its own to knot the count at 5-5 with 4:17 remaining in the
half. Mackrides registered the Tribe's lone goal during the span.
Mackrides
earned her second goal of the afternoon off a free-position opportunity with
just 20 seconds on the clock to help W&M take a 6-5 edge at the
intermission.
The Monarchs
began the second half with three unanswered goals in the opening 1:30 to take their first lead of the contest. Although Dougherty scored with 27:34 showing to
narrow the margin to 8-7, ODU added two more goals in the next three minutes to
build a three-goal advantage.
Back-to-back
goals by junior Caitlin Murphy and Salmon at 22:17 and 21:28, respectively, cut
the gap to just one, 10-9, once again. However, ODU outscored W&M, 4-1, the
rest of the way en route to securing the win.
Lisa
Bernardini, Rebecca Reymann and Sarah Wright all recorded three goals apiece to
lead ODU.
The Tribe will
return to action when it hosts Towson on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
