Williamsburg, Va. - The William
and Mary baseball team used a balanced offensive attack to extend its win streak to seven games with an 11-1 victory over
George Washington on Wednesday night at Plumeri Park. The Green and Gold's
seven-game winning streak is its longest since the 2004 season and pushed its
overall mark to 9-5 on the year, while the Colonials fell to 2-8.
Sophomore Ryan
Lindemuth and junior
Ryan Williams provided the muscle early for W&M with
home runs in the first two innings. Senior
Tadd Bower was 2-for-3 on the day
with an RBI, while freshmen
Josh Smith and
Josh Mason added a pair of RBI's in
the victory. Junior
Ryan Brown, Lindemuth and Smith each scored a pair of runs
for the Green and Gold. Nine different players registered hits for the Tribe,
while eight scored runs and six delivered RBI's.
Junior pitcher
Brett Goodloe (1-0) earned the win for W&M with four scoreless innings. He
struck out three batters and scattered six hits. Senior
Chris Yates and
Williams each pitched two spotless innings for the College out of the bullpen,
while junior
John Farrell secured the victory with a scoreless ninth. Yates
struck out a pair, while Williams allowed just one hit. George Washington's
Craig LeJeune (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in 1.2 innings.
The Green and
Gold struck first as Lindemuth hit a 1-0 offering deep over the left field
fence in the opening inning. It marked the second game in as many as days that
the Tribe sophomore homered as he reached base safely for the 12th consecutive
game. Lindemuth also homered in the third inning of the Tribe's 6-2 win at VMI
on Tuesday.
After Goodloe
worked out of a 1st-and-3rd situation in the top of the second, W&M tacked
on three more runs in the home half of the frame again via the long ball. Bower
doubled off the base of the right center field fence to lead off the second,
before Smith was hit by pitch to put two guys on with no one out. After the
Colonials recorded a pair of outs, Williams launched a 2-0 pitch over the left
field fence for his first home run of the season to extend the College's lead
to 4-0.
The Colonials
again threatened in the top of the third and fourth innings. A wild pitch put
GW base runners at second and third in the third, but Goodloe stepped up to
strike out the Colonials' cleanup hitter Jimmy Best to end the inning. George
Washington put two runners on with just one out in the fourth before Goodloe induced
a ground out to short and a fly out to center to end the threat.
George
Washington finally pushed across a run in the top of the seventh inning as
Brett Bowers and Kyle Gelling set the table with back-to-back singles to lead
off the inning. Williams came on to pitch for the Tribe, and with runners at
the corners, GW tried a squeeze play with Justin Albright. The Tribe's junior
pitcher sprung off the mound and threw home as
Devin White tagged out Bowers at
the plate. Stephen Oswald plated Gelling with a single through the right side.
Another bunt moved Oswald to second to put two runners in scoring position with
two outs, but Williams forced Matt Murakami into a lazy fly ball to right to
end the inning.
In the bottom
of the seventh, W&M answered with five runs on four straight hits with
runners in scoring position. The Tribe loaded the bases as the first three
batters reached. After
Kevin Nutter drew a leadoff walk, Brown looped a single
down the right field line and Lindemuth was hit by a pitch. Following a
strikeout, Bower laced a 2-0 pitch to right, bringing home the first Green and
Gold run of the inning. On the very next pitch, Smith roped a ball into the
left field corner for a two-run double. Mason and sophomore
Devin White both
added RBI singles to push the W&M lead to 9-1.
W&M added two
more runs in the eighth. The College again loaded the bases this time with one
out. Mason drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Brown, and freshman
Michael Katz
raced home on the ball-four, wild pitch to put the finishing touches on an 11-1
Green and Gold victory.
The Tribe will
return to action when it opens CAA play against Northeastern this weekend at
Plumeri Park. The three-game series will get underway on Friday at 4 p.m.
