LEXINGTON, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team defeated in-state foe VMI, 6-2, for the
College's first win in Lexington since 2003.
The Tribe also pushed its winning streak to six in a row with the
victory over the Keydets. With the win, W&M
improved to 8-5 overall while VMI fell to 4-7 on the season.
Senior RHP Jay McCarthy (1-1) was outstanding on the mound
for the Tribe en route to his fist win of the 2012 season. The Yorktown, Va., native tossed seven
innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits, while striking out
four. VMI's Connor Back (0-1) took the
loss in his four innings of work. Senior Chris Yates pitched a scoreless eighth
inning out of the bullpen, registering a pair of strikeouts for the Green and
Gold.
Sophomore Ryan Lindemuth continued his outstanding play as
he led the Tribe offensively with three RBI's and his first home run of the
season. The former Lake Braddock H.S.
standout finished the afternoon going 2-for-5.
Junior center fielder Ryan Brown went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair
runs scored, while senior outfielder Stephen Arcure was 1-for-4 with an
RBI. Senior catcher Chris Forsten
recorded two hits and scored a run during the afternoon affair.
In the top of the first, the College jumped out to an early
2-0 advantage. Junior second baseman
Kevin Nutter, who had two hits on the day, led the inning off with a single to
left field and took second after a VMI wild pitch. He then advanced to third after a Brown bunt
single to first. With no outs and
runners on the corners, Lindemuth laced a double down the left field line that
plated Nutter and gave the College a 1-0 lead. With one out and Brown on third, Smith drove
home W&M's second run of the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to center
field that put across Brown.
The College scored two more runs in the top half of the
third, as it pushed its stranglehold to 4-0.
After Brown reached base with a single down the right field line, the
Fredericksburg, Va., native moved into scoring position after stealing
second. With one out and Brown on
second, Lindemuth homered to left field on a 2-2 offering from Keydet pitcher
Connor Bach.
After eight innings were in the books the Green and Gold
owned a 6-0 lead after tacking on a run in both the seventh and eighth
innings. Brown's double down the left
field line drove home sophomore Bobby Klein in the top half of the seventh,
while Arcure ripped a single through the middle of the infield that scored
Forsten in the eighth.
Down to their last three outs, the Keydets threatened in the
ninth. With not outs and freshman Drew
Bryan on third and senior George Picccirilli on second, VMI's junior outfielder
Rob Dickinson drove home Bryan on a sacrifice fly to center field that cut the
W&M lead to 6-1. VMI kept the momentum alive with a single up the middle by
junior Andrew Montague which plated Picccirilli, making the score 6-2,
Tribe. W&M reliever Matt Huston preserved
the College's win after he got VMI's Michael Donovan to line out to freshman
first baseman Michael Katz for the games final out.
Tribe baseball returns to action tomorrow as it plays host
to the George Washington Colonials of the Atlantic-10 Conference. The first pitch from Plumeri Park is
