WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Behind
a season-high 19 runs and 21 hits, the William and Mary baseball team defeated
Towson, 19-2, Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the scored tied at 1-1 heading into the
bottom of the fourth, W&M scored 18 runs in the next four innings en route
to the victory. The win improves the
College to 18-11 overall and 6-5 in CAA play, while Towson drops to 13-13 on
the year and 7-4 in league action.
On the mound, junior LHP Matt Wainman (3-3) notched his
third victory of the season as he pitched five innings, allowing just two
earned runs on three hits. Towson's RHP
Taylor Clarke (1-3) took the loss in his 3.1 innings of work. Freshmen RHP J.T. Castner and LHP Jason Inghram combined to toss two scoreless innings of relief. Junior RHP John Sheehan saw an inning of
work, as he allowed no runs and no hits.
Senior RHP Chris Yates worked a scoreless ninth to close out the Tribe
win.
Senior catcher Chris Forsten went 2-for-4 with six RBIs,
three runs scored and a grand slam to lead the W&M attack. His fifth inning grand slam put the College
in control, as it went up 10-1. Freshman
designated hitter Josh Smith tallied two RBIs and three runs scored on a
4-for-6 effort. Sophomore third baseman
Ryan Lindemuth recorded four hits and two RBIs, while junior center fielder
Ryan Brown went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Junior second baseman Kevin Nutter's solid day included three hits and
two runs scored. Senior Tadd Bower
rounded out the offensive outburst with a 3-for-5 effort, which included an
RBI.
W&M got on the scoreboard first with a run in the
opening frame. Nutter led the inning off
with a single to center field and later scored on a Bower two out RBI single to
center field, giving the Tribe an early 1-0 lead.
Towson answered as it tied the contest up at 1-1 with a run
in the top half of the third. Sophomore
designated hitter Dominic Frantantuono plated sophomore second baseman Pat
Fitzgerald on a single to center field.
The College took control of the afternoon affair as it plated
five runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
W&M loaded the bases after Bower, Lindemuth and Smith all reached on
singles. With no outs and the bases
loaded, freshman shortstop Josh Mason ripped a bases clearing double down the
right field line, giving the College a 4-1 advantage.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Forsten put W&M up 10-1
with one swing of the bat. On 1-0 count, Forsten belted Nicholas Cioffi 's offering
over the left field wall for a bases clearing grand slam, plating Lindemuth,
Smith and Mason in the process.
After the Tiger's plated a run in the top half of the sixth,
W&M countered with three runs in the bottom half to extended its lead to 13-2. Lindemuth plated the frames first two runs
with a single to center field, which pushed across Bower and freshman first
baseman Michael Katz. The inning's
third run culminated after Forsten drove in Lindemuth on a fielder's
choice.
Ahead 13-2, the Green and Gold pushed its margin to 19-2 as
it scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior right fielder Stephen Arcure put the
College ahead 19-2, after he drove in Forsten and Smith with a two out triple
down the left field line.
Tribe baseball will conclude its series against Towson
tomorrow with the first pitch from Plumeri Park slated for 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action online at
