FAIRFAX, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team fell to George Mason, 8-2, Sunday afternoon in its
series finale against the Patriots. With
the contest tied up at 2-2, Mason put across six runs in the fifth inning en
route to the win. For the year, W&M
falls to 16-10 overall and 5-4 in CAA play, while George Mason improves to
15-10 on the year and 4-5 in league action.
At the plate, junior center fielder Ryan Brown totaled a
career-high four hits (4-for-5) and a run scored to lead the Tribe. Senior left fielder Stephen Arcure went
2-for-4, while sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth finished the tilt going
2-for-5 with an RBI.
Junior LHP Matt Wainman (2-3) took the loss in his 4.1
innings pitched. Mason's senior RHP A.J. Johnson (2-4) earned the victory for the Patriots. Freshmen RHP J.T. Castner and LHP Jason Inghram combined to pitch two innings of relief, allowing
no runs on just one hit. Junior RHP John Farrell saw an inning of work, surrendering no runs and no hits.
In the bottom of the first, George Mason plated a pair of
runs to take took an early 2-0 lead. After
going up 1-0 on a sacrifice fly, sophomore first baseman Anthony Montefusco's
double to right center field drove in senior shortstop Brig Tison for Mason's
second run of the frame.
W&M countered in the top half of the third with two runs
of its own. With one out, junior second
baseman Kevin Nutter got things going with a double down the left field line
and later advanced to third after a Brown single to center field. Lindemuth then put Nutter across with an
infield single for W&M's first run of the contest. With two outs, senior catcher Chris Forsten
loaded the bases after pelting a single to center field. Brown then scored the Tribe's second run of
the inning after advancing home on wild pitch from GMU's Johnson.
The Patriots scored six runs in the fifth as it took control
of the Sunday afternoon affair. With two
outs and the bases loaded, senior catcher Jake Leonardo capped off the six-run
frame with a bases-clearing double to right center field, giving Mason an 8-2
advantage.
The College threatened the Mason lead by loading the bases
in the top half of the eighth but was unable to plate any runs. Freshman right fielder Josh Smith and Arcure
led off the frame with back-to-back singles, and Williams loaded the bases
after registering a walk. With no outs
and the bases loaded, GMU retired the next three Tribe batters and escaped the
frame allowing no runs.
The College returns to action Tuesday, March 27, as it
concludes its eight-game road stint at Richmond with the first pitch from Pitt
Field scheduled for 3 p.m. Fans can
