Tribe Baseball downs Mason, 6-3, in Game Two

FAIRFAX, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team rebounded to win game two of its doubleheader, 6-3, over George Mason Friday afternoon.  After the lead exchanged hands multiple times over the first three innings, W&M scored four runs in the fifth to gain control of the contest.  The win improves the College to 16-9 overall and 5-3 in CAA play, while Mason falls to 14-10 on the year and 3-5 in league action.

Senior designated hitter Stephen Arcure was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Tribe's offensive attack.  Junior second baseman Kevin Nutter went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while freshman first baseman Michael Katz notched an RBI in his 2-for-4 outing.  Rounding out the Green and Gold's effort at the plate were senior left fielder Tadd Bower, junior shortstop Ryan Williams and sophomore Ryan Lindemuth, who each recorded an RBI.

Senior LHP Cole Shain (2-2) pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits en route to earning his second victory of the season.  Once again, W&M's bullpen was stellar, as relievers senior RHP Jay McCarthy (3-1) and junior RHP John Farrell combined to work three innings of shutout baseball.  Farrell was sharp and collected his sixth save of the season.

In the late afternoon affair, the Patriots struck fist with a run in the first inning.  Sophomore left fielder Josh Leemhuis plated senior shortstop Brig Tison on a sacrifice fly to right field for Mason's first run of the contest.

W&M responded with a run in the top half of the second to tie the contest at 1-1.  Williams platted Katz on a single to left field for the Green and Gold's first run of the game.

The College took a 2-1 lead in the third after Lindemuth drove in Nutter on a single to left field.  Mason countered in the bottom half of the frame with two runs as it regained a 3-2 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, the Green and Gold plated four runs as it regained the lead at 6-3.  Nutter led off the frame with a bunt single and later advanced to third after a Brown single.  Lindemuth loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, and Bower plated Nutter with a sacrifice fly to left field.  With two outs and runners or second and first, Katz drove in Brown to give the College a 4-3 lead.  Arcure extended the W&M margin to 6-3 after he belted a double to center field, which plated Katz and Lindemuth.

Tribe baseball concludes its three-game set at George Mason tomorrow, Saturday, March 24, with the first pitch from Spuhler Field scheduled for 1 p.m.  Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live stats.
