Tribe Drops Home Match with No. 59 Virginia Tech

Williamsburg, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team fell to No. 59-ranked Virginia Tech, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. Sophomore Maria Belaya continued her strong play with a victory at the No. 1 singles position, while the Tribe's top doubles team of Belaya and sophomore Jeltje Loomans ran its win streak to 10 matches against the Hokies. W&M fell to 4-12 on the year, while Virginia Tech upped its mark to 11-5.

The reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week, Belaya and Loomans, jumped started the Tribe in doubles with a victory at the top spot. The Tribe tandem wasted little time in disposing of Martha Blakely and Tea Ivanovic, 8-1, to run its win streak to 10 matches. The pair upped its mark to 17-5 overall and 10-2 in dual match play. The Hokies came back to take the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

In singles action, Belaya rallied from a set deficit to record her 10th win of the year. After Blakely claimed the first set, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles post, Belaya bounced back with a 6-1 triumph in the second. In the decisive third set, the Tribe sophomore jumped out to an early advantage on the way to a 6-2 win. She pushed her dual-match mark to 9-6, including a 3-3 ledger at the No. 1 singles positions.

Virginia Tech though answered with straight-set wins at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 positions to clinched the team victory. At the No. 5 slot, senior Katie Kargl tried to rally from a set deficit before falling in a third-set super tiebreaker. The Hokies' Carol Kahoun took the opening set, 6-4, before Kargl won the second, 6-3. With the team result already decided, Kahoun came back for a narrow 10-8 win in the third set super tiebreaker.
